I first tried it with 10 lbs. It worked fine. I also tried with 5 lbs. I could do more reps with 5 but it still made my forearms hurt.

personally, I would start with a 2.5lb weight. and work up from there. heavy weights are not needed to develop strength and a muscular forearm. just remember to start slow if you are a beginner.

What is the recommended weight to use for beginners? 5lbs, 10lbs, ...?

The round metal stopper at the bottom of the rope is what hold the weight on.

Awesome for volleyball and basketball players. My son uses it to help strengthen his basketball shot and my daughter uses it to help her with her setting. Forearm development is key in both sports. In basketball it helps u use all forearm and wrist for a quick release and in volleyball it develops the strength to set the ball from end to end

Great workout for forearm development.

The Gold's Gym WristRoller is a great buy, I made one myself from a strap and a metal rod, but it didn't have the cushioned grips. For what it is, it works awesome, you will truly feel the burn and see forarm gains fast with this. You could make your own but for around 15 bucks or so, you could have this beauty shipped to your door in a week or so. Am I happy with this purchase? Yes I am. Would I reccomend it to friends? If I had any that were starting to get into working out I would.

One thing, if you don't have any kind of wieght plates, you will need to pick some up at wal-mart or someplace else that sells them, the smallest ones are only a few dollars each, the price goes up with the wieght

Also great to prevent symptoms of carpel tunnel syndrom, or so I've read, so it could be beneficial for someone who is especially prone to that kind of thing.

For working on these muscles, it can't be beat. I used it in physical therapy and bought it for myself afterwards. You just have to make sure to get the weights or it with the one inch aperture.

Does the job

Love the pump and burn this gives in my forearms after just a 3- 4 sets. The weight pin and round disc washer is actually big enough to hold in Olympic plates, so don't worry if it says for standard plates... it works with both.

Effective tool to build wrist and forearm muscles

The device is and will be fine for lighter weights. The bar and padding could be a little thicker. The center piece needs to be a little higher on the edges, if you're not careful the nylon rope will go over. The rope is nylon and stretches, wish it were REAL rope or even a chain. The clasp does not seem to be strong enough to handle much.

A little cheesy

the structure is good, however the designer definitely does not workout!!
the foam handles are far too soft to be optimal for the forearms, as the increased softness hinders/sticks the grip, making it work less on the forearms & more on the internal/external hand muscles

good, but not good enough

I would have given this product a 5....however it has one major flaw and one minor flaw.
The main problem is where the rope enters the handle. It loops through the handle with a huge not and off set, to the right. This becomes a major issue as you coile the rope, it will not flow back and forth easily. The rope has a tendency to get stuck on that side, then jump over the handle guide and coile on the handle it self. 
Which brings us to the 2nd flaw the handle guide is too small. The rope will jump it almost every tIme do to the first flaw. 
Over all a good product.....however there are ones out there with a better design.

One major flaw

The foam covering the handle is too spongy .  The rope is so long I have to do my forearm exercises from a three story building.  But it does work as advertised.

Better than nothing

Horrible engineering. What kind of genius ties a knot on a string then shoves it through a hole in a hollow bar with a rubber band around it. Well guess what then attach only 20 lbs to the other side and of course it just pulls right out after only 4 workouts and punctures the bench on a $600 workout machine.

Worst engineered product.

Shoddy craftsmanship at best. The nut that's supposed to hold it all together easily falls off, even when just carrying it around. The first one I picked up off the shelf was missing the nut and plate, so I grabbed a different one.  After only one use, the nut came off when walking to my car in the dark and I couldn't find it, making the rest of it useless. I can only use it now if I rig it to hold weights. You're better off making your own tool instead of buying this garbage.
