Yes, our GoFlex Desk drive does require an external power supply to be plugged into an electrical outlet to run. However, we do have our GoFlex Portable line of drives that do not require an external power source as they are powered on by the USB cable itself.

Yes. It comes with the power adapter required to operate; it's not ultimately portable in that you have to plug it into a wall outlet. It does have a power-saving mode, though, whereby it 'sleeps' when not in use.

Does this external require a outlet to run?

You should be able to use your Windows 7 backup software on our 1TB GoFlex Desk drive. You can use that even if you use our software as well. They can co-exist. On drives larger then 2TB, we would recommend using our backup software only as Windows 7 backup may not work properly.

You can use most any program. I personally use Windows Backup instead of what came with the product. The device will be seen as just another hard drive by Windows.

Will the pre-loaded software prevent me from using Windows7's full backup of my computer.

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. While the connector will fit into USB 1.0 and USB 1.1, there may not be enough power provided on the USB cable to use the drive on USB 1.x. On the systems that do not have USB 2.0, you will need to consider an add-in controller for at least USB 2.0.

I believe most PCs will utilize 2.0 and 3.0 features. My computer has 2.0 Hard Drive but this unit works fine although it is 3.0.

Does this package include an adapter base for both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports use?

I've been using this drive for several weeks now, mainly as a backup device for my computer. It worked great right out of the box and has been serving without issue. I don't use the backup software that came with it, but so far the drive itself works like charm.

One of seven Seagate Hard Drives we own...Great Product.

I purchased this product with great expectations. It worked brilliantly for about a week. I copied 4 movies to it last night then shut everything down.

Went on the laptop in the morning and hooked it up and got nothing. 100% dead. I checked power source multiple times and have done everything on the support forums. Thank god I purchased the two year warranty.

Extremely Dissapointed!

I had thought I had done my research before buying this product but somehow I missed the reviews on this. I never would have bought this after seeing all the bad reviews. This product worked fine the first time I did my back up although it did take 4 1/2 hours to complete. The second time it worked fine too. Since then it won't work at all. Keep getting a message that it wasn't connected. It would also shut my computer completely down. My son and I have done everything we know to correct the problem and nothing helps. I thought I was doing something great getting a 2 TB because I have lots of photos that are large files that I wanted backed up. I'm very disappointed. If I could have given this a zero star rating I would have.
