During his time on American Idol, Michael Johns' strongest performances always emphasized the bluesy side of his voice, culminating in a nuanced, slow-smoked cover of Dolly Parton's &quot;It's All Wrong But It's All Right.&quot; Two years after his unexpected elimination, Johns makes his post-Idol debut with Hold Back My Heart, a surprisingly strong album that finds him doing what he does best: soul, Southern rock, and contemporary blues. The album title is unfortunate, of course -- more appropriate for David Archuleta's teenaged pop than Johns' thirtysomething songcraft -- but that's the worst thing about Hold Back My Heart, which sounds looser and less calculated than most albums by American Idol's alumni. While none of Johns' own songs can quite measure up to &quot;Heart on my Sleeve,&quot; a stand-out ballad composed by John Shanks and James Morrison, his own compositions are perfectly acceptable, showcasing his coarsely scrubbed baritone and preference for earthy melodies. Organ, horns, and background vocals enhance the vibe, but Hold Back My Heart is essentially a showcase for Johns' voice, which sounds better here than it ever did on television. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

This is a excellent first CD, every time I listen to it I hear more and more of the nuances. When Michael was on AI his true voice didn't come through like it does on this album. I love it. I can listen to it over and over and still want more. Congratulations Michael, keep up the great voice!!!

Michael Johns 1st CD

30 year old Michael Johns known for his amazing vocals as a contestant for season 8 on the very popular show American Idol. Australian native Michael was as many said voted off too early.
This CD shows how true that really is. With many soulful songs, Michael Johns, really captures the hearts of listeners. His upbeat songs, are really fun to just bop your head to or dance around like a complete goof.
His music is soulful, genuine, and relatable. This has quickly become a favorite CD of mine, and at the wonderful price of only $10.
I would recommend this CD to everyone. Give it a shot, I'm almost positive you will love it.

For $10.00 this was a great buy. If the price was higher like many other albums sell for, I'd still buy it! I've been a Michael Johns fan since I've heard him open his mouth to sing. I definitely wasn't let down by this album and I encourage you to buy it! The songs are so catchy and after listening to it twice I keep hearing it playing in my head and it doesn't bother me one bit!

THIS CD WOULD HAVE GOTTEN 5 STARS, EXCEPT THAT I DON'T CARE FOR THE "FAST" SONGS. ALL OF MICHAEL'S SLOW AND BLUESIE SONGS ARE REALLY GREAT. THAT'S WHAT HE SHOULD STICK TO SINGING. I LOVE IT THOUGH.(I JUST SKIP THE FASTER SONGS)
