When buying a coffee grinder I wanted a burr grinder, the last chop grinder I had was awful, uneven grind & burnt taste. So after researching and learning about grinding coffee, I discovered that burr grinders were only second to conical burr grinders. Then I found out how expensive they were, all over $100. When I saw this Black & Decker Burr Grinder I couldn't believe it, but I thought I would give it a try for $30. Great results, uniform grind with so many settings from very coarse to almost a fine powder. It is very loud but grinds very quickly and if you follow the instructions very easy to clean. I don't know what the customers writting reviews are talking about being messy, if used properly all the grinds stay perfectly in the container and pour effortlessly into the coffee filter. I grind fresh now before every brew and will never make coffee the old way again. The taste of fresh ground coffee is amazing, you will not be disapointed with this grinder, especially for the price.

Burr Grinder for under $100!!!

This coffee grinder produces good ground coffee from beans. the only down side would be it is difficult to clean

Yes, it is loud when grinding. Yes, on the finest setting it still produces some larger flakes and (very few) chunks. That is because it is not a conical burr grinder, but a tapered disc grinder (cheaper to produce). However, when set on FINE, it produces a grind that drips predictably. In other words, the actual grind mix does not vary from grind to grind. Any fresh ground coffee is still twice as good as the vacuum-packed pre-ground coffee. So most of the reviews here are correct, but so what? You get fesh coffee but less expensively. Also, it is not messy at all, but you do have to remember to out the little plastic top onto the plastic grounds receiving chamber. If you don't then yes, it is somewhat messy. If you do, then it is is clean as a whistle (almost). And it grinds as fast as greased lighting. And my kids sleep right through the grinding noise, you experience may vary.

B & D Burr Grinder is good for the money.....

I had fairly high hopes for this little unit, but I am very disappointed. This grinder is noisy and very, very messy.

The noise is excessive. In fact, I'd call it loud. I'm afraid it wakes the kids up every morning I use it.

Also, I discovered my counter isn't quite level. The grinder vibrates toward the wall as it's grinds. Not exactly what I wanted in a grinder either. Maybe better rubber feet would be nice.

Additionally, it is very messy. Granules escape from the front as it's grinding. Then when you pull the the grind catcher from the front it spews more grinds. Also, the shape is so awkward that when you try to load your coffee filter you make even more of a mess. The grinds stick so well to the catcher that you have to tap the sides to get a large part of them out.

The instructions say that you need to clean the coffee grinder after every use. Well, if I did that I'd need to get up about 15 minutes earlier, because I think that's about how long it would take to thoroughly clean it. The cleaning brush that comes with this grinder is a joke. I think a 2 inch soft bristle paint brush might do it, but I'm not even sure that would cut it.

The only saving grace to this unit is it will grind coffee. And it does an OK job of it. The grind settings don't seen to mean much however. It appears to give me the same fine grind whether it's on the fine or coarse setting. Well, OK there is another saving grace: it looks great with my black and stainless coffee maker.

It is a step up from a cutting type grinder, but it's a messy step up. Forget this unit. Save your money and get a better one.

Bummed

Being an avid fan of Black & Decker products, I thought this grinder would be great! Unfortunately, the grinder is very loud and messy. Not all beans grind, and the plastic chamber does not slide out easily causing ground coffee to spill all over.

After grinding, a small (1 teapsoon full) of coffee sticks to the sides and top of the container. This requires additional effort and creates more mess.

Having owned a Burr grinder in the past, this product produces well ground coffee without the burnt taste. I purchased it to replace my Mr. Coffee grinder, which I had for several years.

Not worth the money

It is a good and inexpensive coffee grinder, but its finest setting is perfect for drip coffee, not espresso. A true grinder will create a powder, but this doesn't even come close. It is very loud, and can be messy if you're not careful. If you drink drip or percolated coffee, it's pretty good. If you drink espresso, don't bother. You have to buy a good mill, or use a blade grinder.

Not for espresso lovers

The main problem I have with this grinder is that when set on the finest grind, the beans are only ground to a medium grind. For drip or expresso you need a fine or extra fine grind. What comes out of this machine looks like something out of a blade grinder. Whoever designed and tested this appliance is obviously not an expresso coffee drinker.

Wont grind fine enough for expresso

Having worked in a coffee house all through college and grad school, I know well the difference a good burr grinder makes. When I saw this one I couldn't believe how cheap it was and had to try it. Well, you definitely get what you pay for with this model. Mine could never achieve a consistent grind; it was always half espresso-fine and half chunky, regardless of the setting. I was frustrated, but tried to stick with it. However, after about 3 weeks, the thing died in its sleep and went to the landfill. Save your $35 for a decent piece of equipment.

Waste of Money

This product was horrible. It did not matter what you set the grinding setting to, it would always come out extremely coarse, too coarse for even a drip coffee maker. It was also inconsistent in its grind, even spitting out WHOLE coffee beans at times. I had planned to use this for my pump espresso machine, but the grind this machine produces is even worse than a blade grinder. This would probably work for a percolator or a french press, but not much else. I returned this product to the store.

Not even worth it

I got this grinder as a Christmas present. The 2nd day it started acting up. The 3rd day it quit working at all.
I am back to using the Capresso Burr grinder I bought myself a year ago and am packaging this one back up to return to the store. I sure am glad I did not get rid of the grinder I had when I received this joke of a grinder.
