Personnel: Morrissey (vocals); Alain Whyte, Boz Boorer (guitar); Roger Manning (keyboards); Gary Day (bass guitar); Dean Butterworth (drums).
Recording information: Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California; Sarm Hook End, Berkshire, England.
Armed with a new label (Attack Records), a new producer (Jerry Finn of Blink 182 and Green Day fame), and, on the album cover, a Tommy gun, Morrissey immediately lines up his targets at the outset of YOU ARE THE QUARRY. The sharp-witted Brit-pop icon takes shots at the United States and England, respectively, on the biting "America Is Not the World" and the bold "Irish Blood, English Heart." Unsurprisingly, the rest of the album doesn't shy away from frustration-fueled topics ("I Have Forgiven Jesus," "The World Is Full of Crashing Bores"), revealing that the former Smiths singer hasn't missed a step lyrically or vocally in the seven years since 1997's MALADJUSTED.
Enhanced by the guitars of longtime collaborators Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer, the sound here is vintage Morrissey, though a few tracks bear the energetic influence of QUARRY's punk-pop-inclined producer. Standout songs include the gorgeous, dreamy "I'm Not Sorry" and "First of the Gang to Die," a love letter to his unlikely Latino fan base in Los Angeles. While the record clearly marks a new phase for the beloved crooner, it also reminds listeners of why they grew to love him in the first place.

Personnel: Gene Ammons (tenor saxophone); John Coltrane (alto saxophone); Paul Quinichette (tenor saxophone); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Jerome Richardson (flute); Mal Waldron (piano); George Joyner (bass); Arthur Taylor (drums).
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on January 3, 1958. Originally released on Prestige (7132). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.
Digitally remastered by Gary Hobish (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
THE BIG SOUND is a companion to GROOVE BLUES. Both albums were recorded on a single day in 1958 and feature an impressive array of players. Ammons' tenor saxophone is joined here by John Coltrane's alto, Paul Quinichette's tenor, Pepper Adams' alto, and Jerome Richardson's flute. The rhythm section is anchored by the piano of Mal Waldron. The set opens with the slow blues "Blue Hymn," an Ammons original. Waldron's "The Real McCoy" then kicks things into higher gear with an excitingly propulsive arrangement. The massed horns state the tune's main theme before breaking off into furious soloing. Likewise, Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" swings at a clip at once laid back and relentless. As with GROOVE BLUES, the album closes with a ballad, the song form forever linked with Ammons.

    Engineers: Bill Halverson, Jim Cotton.
Recorded At The Fire Station, San Marcos, Texas and The Music Mill, Nashville, Tennessee.
Producers: Bill Halverson; The Texas Tornados.
In 1992 the Texas Tornados were a supergroup on a roll, with their third album in three years. Doug Sahm's title track gets things off to a rollicking start, as Augie Meyers' pulsing organ harks back to the days of the Sir Douglas Quintet. Joining the band on guitar for the opener is Sahm's son Shawn, who also wrote "One and Only" (and who was also a member of the band for his father's DAY DREAMING AT MIDNIGHT release). Freddie Fender's vocals are again gorgeous, and accordion player Flaco Jimenez dazzles throughout. The assorted rhythm sections and auxiliary players seamlessly fit together throughout the 10 tracks. Bob Dylan's "To Ramona" is a standout, as is Meyers' good-natured vocal turn on his own "Guacamole."

Personnel includes: Bobby "Blue" Bland (vocals); Mickey Davis, Bob McNally, Claudette Hampton, Peggy Plucker, Janet Dressle, Steve Dressler, Tim Mika, Patrice Evans, Chris Reidlinger, Mike Hatch (strings); Cybil Cheesman (flute); Jim Horn (bass flute, alto & baritone saxophones); Harvey Thompson (tenor saxophone); Harrison Calloway, Gary Armstrong (trumpet); Charles Rose (trombone); Carson Whitsett, Larry Addison (keyboards); Ray Griffin (bass); Roger Hawkins, James Robertson (drums); Jewel Bass, Catherine Henderson, Charlotte Chenault (background vocals).
Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Sheffield, Alabama.
The Jackson, Mississippi-based Malaco Records became Bobby Bland's label from the mid-'80s onward. Dating from 1987, BLUES YOU CAN USE is another strong set, showing his ease with both funky grooves ("Get Your Money Where You Spend Your Time") and slow balladry ("Our First Blues Song").
As is generally the case with Malaco, scant information is provided in the package, but the core band is joined here by horns and/or strings, nicely underscoring the needs of each song. A song like "24 Hours a Day" finds Bland in full command, with his trademark snarling snorts zapping out like uncorked electricity. Bland was well into his fourth decade as a performing and recording artist at the time of these sessions, and he both maintains and expands upon the verve and promise of his recordings for the Duke label in the '50s.
