Full title: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Peter Tosh.
Compilation Producers: Dana Smart; Bill Levenson.
Liner Note Author: David Katz.
Recording information: 1971 - 1973.
This intriguing overview of the early years of the fiery-tempered Jamaican musician collects tracks from the early 1970s, when Peter Tosh was already pursuing a career independent of the Wailers. The Joe Gibbs-produced "Arise Blackman" is a typical Tosh call-to-arms, complete with rootsy Nyabinghi drumming and attractive, catchy backing harmonies reminiscent of the Wailers' mid-'60s incarnation, while Tosh's self-produced sides, such as "Mark of the Beast" and "Once Bitten," are notable for their stripped-down sound and subtle production.
No matter who's at the helm, though, Tosh's revolutionary worldview, contrastingly delivered in his beautifully modulated trademark baritone, is very much in evidence throughout. Though the militant stance of LEGALIZE IT and simmering violence of songs such as "Stepping Razor" were still some years off when these sides were recorded, their roots are heard here in tracks such as the percussion-propelled "Black Dignity" and the anti-authoritarian "No Mercy." THE BEST OF PETER TOSH is a useful snapshot of a man on the verge of a make-or-break career move (Tosh was to quit the Wailers in 1973), and a glimpse into the roots of the singer's nascent solo career.

Full title: Algonquin: Great Performances From The Library Of Congress Vol. 18.
Personnel: Cecil Taylor (piano); Mat Maneri (violin).
Producers: Anne McLean; Music Division; David Starobin; Becky Starobin.
Liner Note Author: Bill Shoemaker.
Pianist Cecil Taylor, an icon of cutting-edge jazz, shows no signs of mellowing with age. His style remains volcanic and unpredictable, touched by a pensive lyricism that draws upon 20th-century classical music. The Library of Congress commissioned Taylor to write a piece, and ALGONQUIN is the result. A four-part suite that features violinist Matt Maneri, the album belongs to Maneri as much as it does to Taylor.
This is not music for casual listening--the improvisations are percussive, angular, expansive, and passionate, with each musician spurring the other onto greater heights, resulting in surprising moments of understated beauty. Maneri wails and rages, yet his playing also encompasses the expressive depth of a cello and the deep, woody tone of a wind instrument. Taylor lets loose a deluge of spiky, elliptical ideas (recalling the piano works of American composers Charles Ives and George Antheil), but also allows silence to speak for him (as Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk did before him), evoking the strangely peaceful sense of being in the calm at the eye of a hurricane.

Full title: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Bob Marley & The Wailers.
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Peter Tosh (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer (vocals, guitar).
Additional personnel include: Tommy McCook (tenor saxophone); Aston Barrett (bass guitar); Carlton Barrett (drums).
Compilation Producers: Bill Levenson; Dana Smart.
Liner Note Author: David Katz.
Recording information: Randy's Studio 17, Kingston, Jamaica (1967 - 1972); Dynamic Sound Studio, Kingston, Jamaica (1967 - 1972).
This compilation offers a brief glimpse into the Wailers' early-to-middle years (they only became Bob Marley & the Wailers after signing to Island Records; Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh quit soon thereafter). It combines a few of the late-1960s sides the group recorded for Texas singer Johnny Nash (whose ska-inflected "Hold Me Tight" had been a big international hit in 1967) with material recorded for the band's own Wail'n Soul'm and Tuff Gong labels, and for the visionary producer Lee "Scratch" Perry.
Songs such as "Small Axe," "Kaya," and "Lively Up Yourself" are all familiar from their later incarnations, and to hear them in their unadorned earlier versions, particularly the primitive recordings of "Stir It Up" and "Soul Rebel," is to experience both their simple power and Bob Marley's faith in their ultimate mass acceptance. THE BEST OF BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS makes clear that the band's raw talent was present from the outset, while hinting at the time and sweat involved in bringing that talent to full fruition.

Personnel includes: John Hartford (vocals, guitar, banjo, fiddle); Jimmy Colvard (electric & flat top guitar); Benny Martin (guitar, fiddle, background vocals); Buddy Emmons (steel guitar, dobro); Dale Sellers (electric guitar); Sam Bush (mandolin, background vocals); David Briggs (piano); Dalton Dillingham, Roy Husky Jr. (bass); Kenny Malone (drums).
Recorded at the Sound Shop, Nashville, Tennessee in 1975.
Hartford is best known as the author of the Glen Campbell hit "Gentle on My Mind," but to judge him by that sentimental ballad would do him a disservice. As this 1975 outing makes plain, Hartford's musical vision contains a large helping of loopy humor tinged with absurdism and occasionally leaning toward the off-color.
The sound here is largely a traditional one, mixing folk, bluegrass, and country, utilizing plenty of fine picking from such hotshots as mandolinist Sam Bush and pedal steel wizard Buddy Emmons, and from Hartford himself on guitar and banjo. With a voice on the humble side of homespun, it's Hartford's sense of humor that makes NOBODY KNOWS so infectious. Whether he's exploiting his lack of vocal range on "False Hearted Tenor Waltz," promoting cannabis for the elderly on "Granny Wontcha Smoke Some Marijuana," or rhapsodizing about sizable mammaries on "The Golden Globe Awards," Hartford's good-natured pokes to the ribs make this a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
