Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1998, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This is part of Prestige's Jazz Showcase series.
Though Miles Davis's 30-year tenure at Columbia Records is considerably better known to the casual observer, some fans of the trailblazing trumpeter feel that his best work was done for Prestige Records from 1953 to 1956, the period covered on this excellent 11-track showcase. Though Davis is clearly the standout on these tracks, his sidemen include Art Blakey, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Red Garland, Thelonious Monk, and John Lewis, making this a virtual Who's Who of the mid-'50s New York cool jazz and hard bop scene. Though Davis's most famous recording for Prestige, "Walkin'," isn't included, other early masterpieces like "'Round Midnight" and "Miles Ahead" are, making JAZZ SHOWCASE a solid introduction to a sometimes-overlooked period in the development of one of jazz's greatest talents.

Full performer name: Art BLakey & The Jazz Messengers.
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Wayen Shorter (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jymie Merritt (bass).
Recorded live in Paris, France on May 13, 1961. Includes liner notes by Georges Paczynski.
Although the less-than-stellar sound quality of this disc may take getting used to, it is the shear power of the 1961 Jazz Messengers that transcends any aural limitations. At a time when they were at the peak of their abilities, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers were captured many times on their legendary treks across Europe. Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter make the perfect front line, bursting with creative energy, while Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt hold down the rhythm section with the stalwart Blakey.
The group's performances from this time contained many works that would go on to become Messengers favorites for years to come. Tunes like Timmons' "Dat Dere," Monk's famed "'Round About Midnight," and the classic "My Funny Valentine" all get brilliant readings here with Shorter, Morgan, and Timmons handling most of the solo spots. Of special note are the original tunes like Shorter's opening burner "The Summit" and Morgan's reflective ballad "Yama," which displays the softer side of the Messengers' sound. Although this group was mostly known for its many stellar sessions for Blue Note, one-off performance discs like this one only add to the legend.

Personnel: Lee Morgan (trumpet); Wynton Kelly (piano); Billy Mitchell (tenor saxophone); Billy Root (baritone saxophone); Al Grey (trombone); Paul West (bass); Charles Persip (drums).
Producer: Art Rupe.
Compilation producer: Billy Vera.
Recorded at Master Recorders, Hollywood, California on February 18, 1957. Originally released on Specialty (2110). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason.
Trombonist Al Grey and tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell were the original stars of this 1957 recording, an offshoot of Dizzy Gillespie's then-running big band. Within a couple of years of this date, however, trumpeter Lee Morgan and pianist Wynton Kelly emerged with careers of their own and today are the most well-known musicians to have been involved in the session. Morgan became known for his work with Art Blakey and for the Blue Note label, and Kelly through working with Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderly and leading his own trio.
Due to the presence of Benny Golsen and Roger Spotts as arrangers (and composers of six out of eight tunes), this session comes off as more of a little-big-band event than the kind of hard-bop situation which Morgan in particular would soon come to epitomize. The four horns are lush and confidant, creating the illusion of a much larger ensemble, and each musician is carefully featured in turn. Fans of Oliver Nelson's THE BLUES AND THE ABSTRACT TRUTH should find much here to their liking, particular Golson's one compositional contribution, the gorgeous "Whisper Not."

Personnel: Benny Golson (tenor saxophone); Nat Adderley (trumpet); Monty Alexander (piano); Ray Drummond (bass); Marvin "Smitty" Smith (drums).
Recorded at 39th Street Music, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Benny Golson.
Saxophonist/composer/arranger Benny Golson, though an unfamiliar name, is practically a jazz institution. Golson wrote such jazz standards as "I Remember Clifford" and "Whisper Not." He's played with, or arranged for, countless jazz and non-jazz performers, among them Dizzy Gillespie, Eric Dolphy, Art Blakey, Eric Burdon, Connie Francis, Quincy Jones and Art Farmer.
With THAT'S FUNKY, the emphasis is on Golson's rich, robust, blues-inflected tenor saxophone. He also pays tribute to the funkier side of the jazz tradition, sometimes referred to as "soul jazz." Lee Morgan's hit "Sidewinder" gets a loose-limbed, swaggering treatment, with a bristling solo from trumpeter Nat Adderley, whose own classic "Work Song" gets a similar treatment. Here, Golson's sly, wild tones prove he's not stuck in the pre-1960s past. The trio of Monty Alexander, Ray Drummond, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith keep the groove going throughout with tight, tasty, rippling playing. Each tune runs an average of seven minutes, enough for everyone to stretch, yet nobody rambles, and every note counts. THAT'S FUNKY is 50 minutes of first-rate mainstream, timeless jazz.
