I haven't sewn in sometime as I was busy with my kids and just never seemed to have time. I decided that I wanted to make them quilts for Christmas this year, but wasn't sure if my brother machine from 1998 could handle heavy material and batting. It just seemed a newer machine recommended for quilting would be more prudent than frustrating myself with the old tension and ultimately giving up on the project. I read the reviews here thoroughly prior to deciding to purchase this machine. I had a bit of difficulty with the thread going beneath the bobbin winder at first but just needed to guide it better at the beginning. Then I had a bit of difficulty with the auto threader...my old machine's was easier. But once that was done, I was really impressed at how EASY the machine is to use! It seems overwhelming at first but if you stick with it and think in terms of 'computer' instead of just sewing machine, it's really easy to figure out. The only unanswered question I have is if you can make the letters bigger. Mind you, I've had the machine for maybe 8 hours. In addition, it felt like christmas with ALL the footers you could possibly need! I love the storage compartment and how everything fits neatly into it. All these accouterments made it seem like it would be impossible to figure out what each purpose was, but they have a neat pull out guide attached to the front left cover of the instruction manual that it was a breeze to understand. I was a pretty avid sewer 10 years ago and getting the tension right on my old machine had me so frustrated a couple of years ago that I aborted the project. So I'm not an 'experienced' sewer, nor am I a newby either. My daughter, however, is new to sewing and has a low end beginner brother machine. Since she's grown up in the computer age, she took right to my machine and maneuvered it easily. My only concern with this machine??? That my daughter will commandeer it and I will be out a machine! So, if you can use a computer--just basics--and you want to sew (with this machine--no experience necessary) then you will LOVE this machine!
