I was expecting more from Kitchen Aid

I used the slicer/shredder to shed hard cheese and it was making a lot of noise. Sounded like it was working "too hard" to do it. The cheese was out of the refrigerator per the instructions. I cleaned it up. The shaft that holds the assembly on to the Kitchen Aid mixer interlocks in the back of the blade. This holds the blade on the assembly while it is slicing/shredding. The first blade was a little stiff to remove from the shaft when I finished with the grating of the cheese. Next I wanted to slice some vegetables so I inserted the clean shaft into the assemble and attached the next blade. The vegetables did not slice correctly. I finished after one vegetable. I removed all to clean, but this time the shaft did not come out of the blade. I tried everything I could to remove it. I used my rubber jar opener which got all cut up. Then I tried the pliers to turn it to come off. It is still on there and will be when I return to the store. The mixer is great...just not this attachment.

Works like a charm if you follow the instructions.

I love this slicer/shredder it makes so many tasks easier. I will say this though you must follow the instructions, I made the mistake of thinking hey I know what I'm doing. I totally messed things up because I didn't put the mixer on the correct speed, this makes a huge difference. First example I tried to shred onions on speed 2 and end up with mush and very teared eyes. Same thing when I tried to make potato chips used the low speed and the potato's ended up a mess. Also when washing hand wash and dry each cone separately, is you machine wash put them on the top shelf and make sure they fully dry, or they can rust. Also for storage I recommend using food grade mineral oil to lightly coat the cones to prevent rust, as an added bonus you can use this time to remind yourself to treat your wooden cutting boards with the same oil.

I purchased this product to work in conjunction with my kitchen cutter. The kitchen cutter suctions to my counter tops but comes unattached half way through use, making it very difficult to use. This attachment works just as well as my kitchen cutter only better because the mixer is the weight and all of my kitchen cutter blades work with this attachment. This makes wonderful fresh cut shredded potatoes and cheese. I saw another review about cabbage. I have not tried it with this attachment but i know it worked well with the kitchen cutter so i cant imagine it being an issue. I use this on almost a daily basis. Since having this product, i have not used my food processor.

Customer review by Squash shredder

Bought to shred summer squash, returned it hours later. Was shredding some overgrown yellow squash which had somewhat hard skins, and after the first two, the shaft became lodged in the housing and would no longer rotate and could not be removed. I think many of the problems with this attachment start with the fact that the blades are extremely dull. I have butter knives that are sharper. Other people have reported that vegetables are turned to mush rather than sliced -- dull blades. Also, others report stress cracks and broken parts, probably from having to apply more pressure to cut due to the dull blades. This would probably be a decent attachment if the blades were sharp enough to actually cut. I returned mine to Bed, Bath & Beyond, who took it back with no problems and purchased a manual shredder with nice, sharp blades for about $20 less.

Had an older one that worked just fine, but the case got cracked. Ordered a new one, and what a disappointment. The blades are dull and won't cut anything, very cheaply made. Finally gave up and used the old blades to cut carrots. Don't waste your money. Seems Kitchen Aid is going down hill. If I didn't need the case, I would return the product.

I was surprised at the amount of low ratings for this, I've had mine for about a year and tell everyone that it was the best investment! After the mixer, of course :) We buy a lot of hard cheeses like parm and pecorino and blocks of cheddar and similar other cheeses and the grater allows me to grate them in a matter of seconds! I've never had any issues with attaching it or cleaning it. I gave it 4 stars simply because I've never actually used all of the cones, just the small grater one.

Great Kitchenaid Accessory

Nothing but good things when you use this slicer/shredder accessory. From vegetables to cheese you can't go wrong. We bought this for ourselves 6 years ago and it's in great condition. We like to grate our own parmesan and cheddar cheese. We grate cabbage and carrots for cole slaw. It's easy to use and to clean. We bought our daughter a Kitchenaid mixer for Christmas and she asked for the slicer/shredder for her birthday. What a daughter. ;)

Poor design and poor fit

Customer review by Techeagle50

Very poor design. The attachment has a piece that is supposed to fit into a notch on the mixer and then a screw to tighten the attachment. I have never been able to push the attachment into the mixer far enough to align the holes to tighten it. That results in the attachment falling off during use, and since I tried to tighten it to prevent that, the plastic on the screw even cracked. Certainly not worth anywhere near the price of this attachment. I only give it two stars because the concept would be great if the product actually worked.

After reading reviews on this product and watching a video on the internet of someone slicing and shredding different items, I decided to purchase the item and see what I thought myself. Like many other reviews, I did not have success with slicing vegetable but I have been happy with how it shreds blocks of cheese (this was my main reason for purchasing). As for the quality of the unit itself, I am not having any issues with it cracking or breaking as other reviews have mentioned. I also have not had any problems with the parts rusting after washing as one review mentioned, but I only hand wash all the parts and make sure to lay them out to completely dry off before storing them. So if you are looking to mostly shred cheese (and like me will not use a hand grater due to a past incident with my finger) I recommend this product.

I just bought this attachment yesterday. I tried to use it today and it turned my cucumbers into mush, I couldn't even use them. The cucumber skin got stuck between the cone and the housing and the parts that did come out were definitely not slices. I tried the thin slices cone and the thick slices cone. All either gave me was a pile of mushed up cucumbers. Huge waste of money.

the device would not shred cabbage. the cutters are really dull and have no bite to them. pushing hard on the cabbage only mushes the output... we tried all cutters without any success from any of them. This will go back with a major complaint attached.

I bought this product to mainly use for shredding although I haven't used it for that purpose yet. I did try slicing carrots and it worked well and quickly. My only complaint is that it was hard to keep the carrots straight once they got shorter. I ended up with longways slices at the end. Other than that it is a nice item, easy to hook up, easy to take apart and easy to clean.

Cracked Housing

Customer review by Chuckie

Bought this attachment for my wife approx. 15-20 years ago. I think in that time we've used it MAYBE ten times at MAX---and that was usually for shredding cheeses, and maybe 3 times w/zucchini. After shredding fresh (as in SOFT) PEELED zucchini today, housing cracked in 3 places. Called the 800 number, guy polite but basically "too bad, so sad, only warranted for ONE year". Offered me a replacement housing for like $24.99. I just told him we'd go ahead & use my late Mom's counter box grater in the future, and leave the Kitchenaid for "show & tell" sitting on the cabinet!! I gave it a one star rating, as it wouldn't let me POST unless I put something--would've LIKED to use like a NEGATIVE five!!

The only thing the slicer did was annoy me, and allow me the opportunity to practice my profanity. I tried to slice onions, and celery . . . the only thing it did was mash both. The blades are dull, and turned my veggies into baby-food. I finally quit and pulled out the food processor to finish my recipe. What I don't need It is well built, rock solid decoration. After I write this review I am taking it back for a refund. Wish it did what I had hoped . . . it didn't. (P.S.) I was going to gift this to my Ex-Wife. Then I realized that I don't hate her that much.

I received this as a gift a couple years ago. It has already rusted and the plastic has cracked. We use it maybe once a month to shred cheese and that is about it. For being a Kitchenaid product I was hoping for a better quality. Unfortunate it only has a year warrenty, I would have hoped it would have lasted longer than 1year.

The shredder turned my Zucchini to a watery mush. I couldn't even use it. For the price I paid I expected a better operating shredder. I have to keep stopping to clean it out. It's hard to use and clean. But i really like the kitchen-aid mixer. But I won't buy anymore attachments.

This does not work well. The "stainless" cones rust. It also doesn't shred or slice cleanly pulverizing and turning whatever you try to put through into mush. I thought this would be great to replace a bunch of different gadgets and appliances that grate, shred and slice but I was so wrong! Besides the poor performance some kind of black grease keeps appearing and gets all over the place, on the food, all over my hands, it's everywhere!!!!
