My children and I are doing The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart as a read-aloud this summer. I loved it on so many levels. It's a fun mystery, encouraging the reader to solve the puzzles and riddles along with the characters. It recognizes the many different ways a child can be "gifted" and how all of these are valuable to the team. It promotes family, co-operation, honesty, overcoming adversity, fighting temptation, strengthening our wills to do the right thing, and it points out the dangers of blindly accepting messages of the mass media. Published in 2007, I believe this book deserves to take its place among the classics of children's literature.
