Save money, prepare your own tax return.
For most taxpayers, HR Block software is easy to use. The software is designed in an interview fashion similar to what a Tax Pro would ask if you had your return prepared by someone else. My only suggestion for someone preparing their own return, is to read the questions carefully. An incorrect answer will give you an incorrect result.
Excellent product !
It’s an excellent product. It captures my prior year information accurately. It’s up-to-date so I don’t have to worry on missing out an item that I need to report to IRS. Federal and State filing is very convenient and so is the refund and payment. It’s great if you have a lot to consider when filing your taxes.
How can one improve on taking less than two hours to complete an entire itemized return, with deductions totaling well over the amount of the increased standard exemption? AND how can one improve submitting by 'e-file'? A couple of clicks and it's gone to IRS AND then IRS has your account and routing numbers (received the government "stimulus" check on the first day)! Forget the post office!!
I found the software relatively easy to use but found it difficult to determine which software to use. for example the last few years I didnt have enough deductions to offset the standard deductions. That said I knew I didnt have it enough this year but had to go through the list before the software would use the standard deduction. Why not have an option up front.
Adequate but a bit rough around the edges
Fairly easy to use but I feel like the interview process has gotten more "lazy" over the years -- more barely explained checklists and less exposition for guidance. I encountered an apparent error in the "accuracy review". It said that I needed to "answer the question below" but there was no question below highlighted so I had to search the whole form for any omissions. I finally found it but it was most annoying having to hunt for it. Overall, considering the complexity of taxes and the relatively low cost of the program, it is a good value, but I think I'd rather pay a little more for something which made the process easier.
H&R Block Deluxe 2019 review
Easy to install and register (unlike a certain competitor's product that insisted on registering every time it was started and then claiming all registration attempts had expired making TOTALLY useless). Help screens cleared up the few questions that I had. Highly recommended
More support for preparing deceased’s return
Works well if you have a straightforward return without unusual items. You could do better with returns being prepared for a deceased taxpayer. I marked that box right at the beginning when I started my mother’s return, but you proceeded as if you were dealing with the live person including sending me an email that said “Dear Lorraine”. You should fix that.
I have used it for several years. But, each year the software never recognizes anything from last year even though it is all stored on the same computer using their software to store it. So all the data from the year before (totals, names, repeat deductions, etc.) are not recognized. The software is cumbersome and not intuitive. I don't like being on a merry-go-round when it comes to software.
Didn't work as well as 2018 did.
Used in 2018 worked ok. 2019 would not import w2s or any other information. Both years I worked at same employer and other info was the same. After I electronically filed it would not let me print copies for my records of the federal but could for state.
Multiple state income issues
It isn’t worth the trouble if you live/work in different states! It doubles income from your W2 if taxes have been withheld from two states, very strange. There is a question asking if this has happened that allows you to fix the error the software made but when you do that it is considered some sort of problem that prevents you from filing your returns electronically. I’ve used this software (and it’s predecessor) for more than ten years but I’ll be getting a different one next year.
Surprised and Delighted by My Returns
After years of doing my taxes on paper, and last year making the mistake of filing my taxes directly on the IRS and state websites, I am so glad I purchased H&R Block's Deluxe Software this year. After answering their questions on my itemized deductions, knowing that the federal standard deductions would prevail, I was delightfully surprised to find that they used the itemized deductions for my state. Lo and behold, I am getting much more money in both federal and state returns than I thought I would. The cost of H&R Block's software more than paid for itself. I will use them from now on without a second thought.
Second Time's a Charm
This was the second year that I used H&R Block Deluxe. I learned that you have to start at the beginning of each required section and enter your data step by step from the beginning to the end of each required section. It was a very rewarding moment when the software system congratulated me for correcting all my errors and completing my tax forms. My tax forms were then sent on to be processed by IRS.
Keeping track of the details
Easy to use and includes schedule C. Overall I am very satisfied. they could have pointed out tome earlier in the process that I would not be able to E-file my state taxes causing me to attempt to file both as recommended which caused the federal to not be sent. Fortunately it was an easy fix.
It’s a nice but could be much better
It’s a nice program but it makes it difficult to switch between the interview mode and the forms mode. In some cases reports a accuracy problem but doesn’t take you to the right place to fix it. One example is the question if you have health insurance.
Simple and effective tax preparation.
This is an effective tool to prepare your own taxes regardless of whether it’s your first time or you’ve been doing it for 20 years. It guides you through every step and reviews your work when you are done to prevent possible errors or omissions. My only complaint is the cost to e-file the state return.
Better value, but state tax software errors.
I chose HR Block tax software primarily because of cost. The functionallity seems consistent with other tax software, at less cost. Federal Tax seemed fine. Did not have any problems with it. Filed a partial year resident MD tax return, and had 2 errors in the program that I discovered. The pension exclusion calculation was entered twice, the second erroneously entered for military/first responders (worksheet 13E). Had to override this to set to zero. Also, the part-year resident indicator at the top of the form was not populated correctly, and had to override the field. Purchase of a second state seemed quite pricey to me. Struggled with trying to get answers to these problems. There really is no resource that I found to report or document these problems and get a resolution.
Tax Program-Love It
I've been using the H&R Block tax programs for years. I enjoy the ease of use, the ability to click on a specific help topic, the quiz to see if you qualify for something, finding out things you are qualified for but never knew, the accuracy check at the end, etc.
Satisfied user for more than twelve years ,
I have been using H&R Block software for the past twelve years. I have never had a problem with my tax returns, they have always been accepted by the IRS. I get my refunds electronically and within a month at the outside, usually two to three weeks. When I have to pay, the funds are withdrawn on the closing date for the return.
Good with limitations
I could not do my taxes without this software, but there was one state form that I was notified that I needed and the software did not give me any help with. That form (PA's W-2 Reconciliation Worksheet) ended up being the most confusing and vaguely documented part of my return. Took almost as long to fill it out as it did the entire return.
OK - Adequate -- but perhaps not the best.
It's OK, a cheaper way to do your taxes. The program helps really don't do a good job of explaining many things, and you will have to go to the internet, and IRS website to obtain the lacking information. But it does its job and I would probably use it again.
