The setting of the novel begins in Kings Canyon National Park on July 21, 1996 the day Randy went missing. The plot of this novel starts by describing the day in which Randy went missing. But then it goes back to when Randy was a child, and how hard he tried for his parents to accept that he did not want to do anything else but, to be ranger so he could be closer with nature. Throughout the book it goes back and forth from the past of what his life was, to the present of what is happening. Leaving the reader with the suspense of not knowing if Randy is dead or alive. The characters of this novel were Randy Morgenson the main character who is lost and Durkee a good friend who did not want to stop looking for Randy after more than a week. The theme of the novel is that no matter how much you love nature, nature just never realizes it and it can take your life away. Because of nature Randy also never really spent any time with his family, which probably caused him to spend his last days sad for he had just received his divorce papers. Another theme of this novel would be not to go living life so fast for example, Randy from when he was young he was already trying to work in the mountains he never really stopped to think about what he was doing with his life and family.
