In certain ways, Jim Rockford resembles the hard-boiled detectives from the 1940's: he takes on cases that start off "innocently" enough but become very complicated, gets beat up a lot, and is always involved with a pretty girl.
On the other hand, he does not carry a gun and often uses his wit and guile to solve the case. And he lives in a broken-down trailer home by the ocean.
James Garner provides his charm and humor to make this an enjoyable and successful series. Many of the plots involve scams, ruses, and fast-talking. One has to wonder, though, how he sustains himself when he often gets gypped out his fees and reward money. Nevertheless, fun to watch.
