In the pursuit of love
This is a quick read and enjoyable story except for Rand's self-righteous attitude. Rand's family and Sarah had absolutely no idea he was living and he is aware of this. Towards the end of the first book he had blamed Sarah for her agreeing to marry Ben Croftner. He doesn't care that her low life brother was coercing her and that she felt she had to for her dying father. This book picks up with the death of Sarah's father and her brother trying to force Sarah into a marriage with Ben. Sarah flees and goes after Rand. From there I felt my frustration growing with Rand's attitude and with Sarah's inability to function without him. Talk about self righteous…the first day at the fort and Rand's already making eyes at another woman. Even worse, by the time that Sarah makes it to the fort herself, he's already engaged! Honestly, I found it so hard to like Rand. though I started enjoying the flow of the story, I really think Sarah deserves someone better than Rand. Did I enjoy the story? Yes. Do I already have a feeling that Sarah is going to end with Rand? Most likely and honestly, I think he's a poor choice. I sure hope that I change my mind about him as the story progresses. A great addition to a nice series.
This was a good addition to a nice series. In fact this one was even better than the first book. Just like the first book this reads very fast as it is just a small part of a bigger story. Even though it is a quick read and a small book it does not lack for content. The characters are very developed and I like how the author describes the scenes. The only bad part about this book is that it ends too soon. You want it to keep going so that you can see what is going to happen next. This book will leave you waiting on pins and needles for the next installment. I do suggest reading these books in order.
Seeking the Love of Her Life
"A Heart's Obsession" is book two of author Colleen Coble's "Journey of the Heart" series. The reader may recall our introduction to the series. The first edition was set in the year 1865, in the pristine locality of Wabash, Indiana as America celebrated the end of the Civil War. Author Colleen Coble begins book two during the Indian Wars of the late 15th Century. Colleen did an excellent job of describing the characters and their emotions, as well as the elaborate scenes. It took six years for a publisher to pick up the original series. This more recent series is a reprise of the original. I vouch for this series to be read by Bibliophile's who enjoy Christian Fiction. I recommend this series be read in sequential order. Be sure to look for my review of the 3rd book, "A Heart's Danger", coming sometime in May. There are a total of six books in the complete series. Disclaimer: I received `A Heart's Obsession` complimentary to review.
Interesting Second Installment!
This is the second installment in the Journey of the Heart series and I liked this second story more than the first. It was interesting to learn more about life at Fort Laramie and the different Native American groups that lived near it. It was so sad to learn how some of them, especially women, were treated by the white men. I liked that Sarah was asked to teach some of the children English and other things, though there wasn't much done with that in the story. I was frustrated with Rand again as he seems to have moved on from Sarah quickly. I couldn't believe Ben showed up; he just doesn't take a hint. I felt sorry for Sarah, but at least she's out from under her older brother's clutches. I admired her determination to treat Jessica nicely, no matter how she was treated by her. There was some suspense as Sarah gets involved in a domestic situation and tries to help someone. I'm definitely interested to read what happens next, but these smaller novellas seem like a more expensive way to read a book than just having it in a normal format. I would recommend it if you like historical fiction. I received this book free from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for an honest review.
A Heart's Obsession is a great novella. As a huge fan of Christian Historical Fiction I have enjoyed these books. I am not one to read novellas but this one really caught my interest. It moved at a good pace and kept me interested from start to finish. I found it hard to put down and it definitely kept me guessing until the end. Colleen Coble writes with authority about the United States during Post Civil War time, military, and travel during this time. I really felt like I was there watching everything unfold the way Colleen Coble described people and places. I enjoyed all of the characters in this story, they are real people with real life issues. I recommend reading these books from book one to keep up with the flow and details. I will say that Colleen Coble does a great job recapping in book two about the events in book one. I highly recommend this novella to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I am excited to move on to Book Three! I received this book from Litfuse Publicity for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book.
Enjoyed This Second Installment of the Series
The story of Sarah Montgomery and Rand Campbell continues in the second installment of Colleen Coble's Journey of the Heart novella series. The series is comprised of six short stories and they really do need to be read in order. I am enjoying this collection. In A Heart's Obsession, I felt so sorry for Sarah and the situation she finds herself in. Heartbroken after the death of her father, she ends up finding more heartache when she travels with her friends to Fort Laramie. Rand is no help, and in fact is at the heart of the problem. He has made choices in both book one and two that frustrated me. But, I am looking forward to continuing on in this journey and seeing how everything builds in the storyline. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through Litfuse Publicity, in exchange for an honest review.
a new life before Sarah at Fort Laramie
Friday, April 10, 2015 A Heart's Obsession by Colleen Coble, © 2015 Journey of the Heart series Part 2 of 6 in the Journey of the Heart series ~ I've made some massive changes to them, and I hope you enjoy these new, updated stories. This installment begins to show what Sarah faces in winning Rand back again. --author Colleen Coble My review: This six-part novella series is a reissue of the Wyoming series, earlier works by Colleen Coble ~ Where Leads the Heart and continuing Plains of Promise, to be enjoyed by new readers and renewed by those who read them when they were first published almost a decade ago. The story continues as Sarah Montgomery travels through the American West with her brother, Jacob, and his wife, and their younger brother, Joel, to Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Thinking her constant friend, Lieutenant Rand Campbell, will be so pleased to see her, Sarah finds she is mistaken as he has moved on without her. As the tribal chiefs near the fort have asked to have their children schooled, Sarah is requested to teach them English and reading and writing. She makes friends with two of the older teenagers, Morning Song and Ah-ho-appa. Change enters into the lives of Morning Song, daughter of White Raven, and a Sioux chief's daughter, Ah-ho-appa; and those at the fort, Jessica and her mother, Letty, and Amelia. Being introduced to new characters, brings them into the story as we continue to learn of the new life before Sarah at Fort Laramie. Trouble comes when Ben Croftner arrives and causes havoc. Will there be retaliation in the midst of winter, removing peace between the fort and the Indian encampment? (to be continued in next month's issue...) These are the six serial parts published in short installments at regular intervals, as a novel appearing in successive issues of a magazine.
