Loved the movie...It inspired me to read the book...But who ever wrote the screenplay only used about the last 15 pages of the story to write the movie.....The whole book was from the point of the son & how miserable his life was because he missed his mother who he thought didn't want him & how screwed up his life was because he was gay.... I could have cut about 250 pages out of the book & got just as much out of it.... Only the last 15 pages finally deal with his mother & her plight to find her son.... All the scenes of her going the convent & going to America appear to be poetic license on the part of the screen writer...... Very, very disappointed in the book after I saw the movie....No comparison ....Still love the movie
If you loved the movie, you will love the book. The movie was focused on Philomena but of course they had Dame Judi. The book is full of much more detail and is really focused on Michael her son. The movie made some changes to make the story work better but the book gives you all of the details of the backstory of the Irish child adoption system, the adoptive family, the son and his sister and then gives you Philomena's story as well. I would recommend both.
