The Best & Most Inspirational Movie of 2011

I saw this film at my local theater and wasn't expecting much as I am not a football fan. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. Not only did it turn out to be one of the most unexpected, inspirational and emotional films I'd seen in a long time, it actually also became one of my favorite films of ALL TIME. When it won at the Oscars I was so happy and not at all surprised. Also it's a film that I think will satisfy lovers of gritty, pull-no-punches true to life stories while at the same time being appropriate for the whole family. And my wife who hates everything loved it, so there's some high praise for you. I highly, highly recommend it.

I was expecting something else instead of the way this movie was done.

I'm not a football fan but this movie is fantastic! It's based on a true story about a coach who dedicates years of his life for free to a group of disadvantaged high school kids. It's more about relationships than the game itself and it even brought tears to my eyes several different times. I've purchased it as a gift for a football fan who I know will love it. The coach is coming out with a book, Against the Grain, in May 2014 which I will buy for a Father's Day gift. See this movie!

This is a captivating documentary that follows a hard-luck, inner-city Memphis high school football team, whose unexpected success starts to make believers in a town that has all but written them off. The relationship between the coach and his players transcends the confines of the football field. It's a compelling coming-of-age piece where players and coaches deal with the ups and downs of daily life and ultimately discover the hidden blessings that flow from working together. It's all at once funny, inspiring, sobering and troubling, but all is made right at the film's extraordinary end. I give it four stars, which may well be unfair, because it falls short of Friday Night Lights, the greatest high school football film ever, IMHO.
