I was searching for a laptop for basic use for school work, shopping, etc. I researched several brands and came across this Gateway laptop on Walmart. Gateway in the late 90's was a great computer, actually the best brand in the market and for some reason the brand disappeared over the years. So I bought it trusting the brand and I must say that I am very happy with it. It is very fast, the picture quality is great, the mouse pad is very smooth, and I'm completely in love with it. There were several complaints on older models on the keyboard being flimsy, but I think Gateway has corrected that issue.
The only drawback is the sound quality on the speakers, but I don't listen to much music or watch movies on my laptop, so it doesn't bug me.
If you are looking for a great laptop and you are on a budget, you can end your search hear :)
The performance seems on par with the fairly basic desktop systems we use in my household/business. It really does play videos from hulu, youtube and vimeo at 720p. I took back 2 asus systems with e1200 processor and the e450 processors respectively. The said they could play 720p but it was herky jerky. When I purchased this one i suspected I would be returning it also. I think I will keep it. I am not impressed with the hd3000 graphics. My old laptop had a very basic nvidia gpu but we could still play a lot of games and videos were fine if not incredible. But the lower power consumption of this gpu/cpu combo means i have 3.5 hrs (minimum) battery life instead of 2 and the notebook will like last a lot longer with less heat and it has a better cooling system. It would be really cool if they could cut another $35 off the price and drop the windows os in favor of ubuntu linux. I really do not need a 500 gb hard drive either. I suppose I can put a lot of movies on it for the kids. The other systems did not have a dvd burner. This one seems nice. It burned the backup dvds in about 22 minutes each. There were 4 of them. A 5th on is required for backing up applications and drivers only. Windows office is superfluous with the advent of google docs and since google docs syncs with my phone (audible dictation is gnar) windows office is a non-plus. The $40 insurance for cracked screen/spillage/accident is an amazing value. Other places I shopped wanted $100 or more and cracked screen was not covered. Ship to store has been very convenient/free/secure. I am a penny pincher. $360 + $40 for the insurance. This was the best bang for the buck out there at the time.
Love the keys in the keyboard, Its super fast
The only tiny problem I found that all usb ports are 2.0 at least one should be 3.0
My girlfriends and I bought the same laptop and we are fascinated. The screen is very crisp.
This laptop is all I wanted and more! It has great childrens aps, Nook, and also a camera and video app, which allows me to post on Facebook, and YouTube!
