UNFORTUNATELY, I tried another brand before purchasing this 3D Blu Ray player. FORTUNATELY this gave me the chance to actually make a comparison.
Here's the deal, many consumers simply do not require yet another internet attached gadget in their homes and simply want a good quality 3D Blu Ray player. I mention 3D because the days of wearing green and red filtered glasses is over and 3D is now actually entertainment quality. 3D technology is now standardized among the movie creators, blu ray players and TV makers using an RF link (bluetooth) with the exception of Sony. 3D glasses are now actively synchronized.
I compared this player against Samsung models. Sadly, the Samsung models are plagued with a primary problem. Quite simply, they overheat because they have too many gadgets crammed into a small box. For those unaware.... do not purchase any slot loading disc player unless it has a self closing slot cover. The rollers on slot loaders ALL become mini grinding wheels rather quickly and scratch discs.
The data on a Blu Ray disc is up to 7 times more compacted than a DVD within the exact same space, this means that a very precise mechanism is required to read this data.
What this means to the consumer is that the Blu Ray player is 7 times more susceptible to problems with scratches. No matter who you are or what you believe.... you MUST take great care of your discs if you intend to own a Blu Ray player.
Having shared those tidbits of common sense.... this player simply works very well and does not suffer from overheating and does allow for cable connections to online services. IT DOES NOT have wireless built in and this is one of the reasons it works so well. (wireless is a separate purchase)
This is not really a 5 star device because there actually is something that could be improved.
Its wireless controller is not backlit and is fairly small and cramped.
You will also notice a whining sound when the player begins playing a Blu Ray. This is a quick loading technique that fills a buffer and stops after a minute or so, the sound is borderline annoying but does stop.
Performance is just fine and menu controls are self explanatory.
I give it 5 stars because if it is compared strictly on design and reliability and ease of use and no other criteria, it actually is a 5 star product.
Similar "non smart" players with similar features and compatibility sell for up to 5 times the price. If you seek a 3D Blu Ray player that is Simple, Basic, and Works without a bunch of frivolous gadgets, this is a good purchase.
What you are paying for is good design, not lots of gadgets. NOTES:
Pioneer has been making optical drives a very long time for the computer industry and has earned a highly regarded reputation for reliability and compatibility.
Samsung Blu Ray players are not refined by experience.... HOWEVER, they do make a pretty nice TV if you don't get a "Smart TV".
Sony needs to jump on board with 3D standardization and I am betting they eventually will.
