I'm not intimately familiar with "In This Moment", having followed them sort of in passing for several years and buying just a few previous songs from iTunes, but after hearing "Blood" and "Adrenalize", and listening to previews of the other songs I decided to pick this up. The band is heavy and tight, never noisy, with just a tinge of pop sensibility to hold everything together. Maria's powerful, often desperate vocals are excellently done. She's theatrical in places, though manages to come off as sincere where some might seem contrived. I particularly enjoy her sense of desperation and, not so subtle suggestiveness. Call me old fashioned, but as much as I love heavy music, I prefer a powerful, but melodic vocal style to all out screaming and this lady has some serious pipes. There are some screams here too, which I enjoy in moderation and at the right moment, but things never quite fall into "hardcore" territory. As I understand it, there have been some lineup changes with the band recently, and they have moved into a slightly more mainstream direction, but that might be a good thing for those of us wanting something with hooks and choruses, but not quite looking to become fans of say, Nickelback. (No offense to their fans). When I like the majority of the songs, and can get a disc for around 10 bucks or less I usually bite.
