These filters last more than the 2 - 4 weeks suggested, but how do you know when you do need to replace them. My take on it is that like for a car, your oil lasts longer than most think, but we have been conditioned to the 3 month/3000 mile routine. That is all well and good, but if money is an issue, an oil analysis would be required to get maximum use from the oil.
Not very practical. Now, when it comes to my pet I want her to be as healthy as possible while maintaining economics. I will replace the filters less often because she is a 9.5 lb. Shih Tzu who is very dainty in her eating and drinking habits and does not leave much debris in her water. For a larger or messier dog, I would probably change a little more often. You get to decide and money should not be an object here.
