This movie is a rarity in that it's as good as I remember it being, even better since I get more of the jokes than when I was a kid. Kurt Russell is excellent as the sidekick/hero. What's weird to me is now realizing it's a John Carpenter film, and I'm not a fan of his work in general, but I love this movie. The soundtrack is pure 80s, but the story is just as good now as it was 20+ years ago. On the DVD itself, the picture was good on my 37-inch HD flatscreen, the sound was alright on my 5.1 system. It won't blow you away, but it's fine considering how long ago the movie was made, and the value for the price. Not many extras, just the theatrical trailer and a fairly current commentary track with Director John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. I found it enjoyable to hear each of them with thoughts/memories on the movie from a far-removed point-of-view, almost a career retrospective. Best price I could find and the site-to-store system was flawless.
