If you're even thinking about buying this, you probably don't need me to go on about how great the series is, (big assumption, but let's face it, Elfen Lied isn't exactly mainsteam here in the states.) so I'll just focus on the DVDs themselves.
3 DVDs, all 13 episodes. Doesn't have the OVA, but then again no one does, North America never really got a release of it because it wasn't dubbed for whatever reason. ( Doesn't bother me, the dub was terrible anyway. :P ) Anywho, the first DVD has a picture of Nyu on it, wearing Kouta's white shirt she's given to wear when she is first found at the beach. It's got episodes 1-5 on it. The second DVD has Nana on it, she's wearing her plain dress and Papa's neck string on her head. This one has epsiodes 6-9. The Final DVD has Mayu and her dog. Shes wearing her yellow sweater and Wanta is licking her face. It contains episodes 10-13. All three girls on the DVDs are set on a yellow background, smiling, and of course, absolutely adorable. :3 Okay, now for the actual quality. They are on dual layer DVDs, so its not compressed to heck like so many other anime "complete collections". I compared them to the original box set release DVDs, and they actually look ever so slightly better. 16:9 anamorphic widescreen, 5.1 dolby digital surround sound on both Japanese and English audio tracks. The English subtitles are exactly the same as the box set, so don't worry about getting some weird translation. All in all very solid DVDs. I only have one complaint. The menus are lame. Very cut and paste, just a list of episodes with a static image of the outline of lucy (naked) and looping ambiant music. The original box set menus weren't dazzling by any means, but at least they had some movement and character. Its by no means a big deal, you don't buy a DVD for the main menu, and it's some cool art, but I just think they were lazy with it. Also there are no special features whatsoever. The box set had a character and production art slideshow, and also the clean textless versions of the opening and ending songs. Not super exciting, but interesting enough if you really liked the show. Oh well, it's not even close to a deal breaker for me, I'm just nitpicking. In conclusion: buy this. Good product for a surprisingly good price. One my favorite animes of all time, now one of my favorite DVDs.
