I'd had AT&T for years, but decided that $70 for a basic phone coverage, and $90 for a smartphone per month were to much. I decided to try a Family Mobile SIM card in my Iphone 3GS. I always had great signal coverage with my previous and the and Iphone with AT&T. I bought the starter kit through Walmart, which basically was a SIM card and instructions on how to activate. Right from day 1, I had consistent dropped calls or "No Service." I called the Family Mobile tech support, and they were no help. I live right in the middle of Salt Lake City, and no matter where I went, I'd have 1 or 2 bars of service at best, but about 30% no signal at all. I tried both my old slider phone & the iphone, both of which had worked fine days earlier on AT&T, and neither worked. Finally, after 10 days of trying, I returned the undamaged kit to Walmart. Weeks later I received a bill for about $25; I called FM about it, and they said that I still owed for the time I used the service. I asked what the $25 up-front fee was (that I was never credited back), and they informed me it was a "startup fee," and that this is not a pre-paid service. They threatened to send me to collections if I didn't pay it, even though I had called them about the no signal issues. Anyway, it cost me $50 to barely be able to use the phone for 10 days in a major city. Terrible customer service, costly, poor coverage!
