Bought this as a second fly rod and now use it as my primary rod. Great product and value!
this rod looks great and the reel is a diffrent story for a 30 dollar combo great reel but i would go to a out door store like Cabelas or Bass pro and get a better built reel. like i said tho for a time to go out and have fun fishing great reel but if you fish everday i would reccomend a better built rod
Bought this to learn fundamentals of fly fishing. This seems to work very well for that purpose. There is little/no information stating what size leader/tippet is manufacturer installed, but is decently priced. Only difficulty I've encountered has been remembering to engage the drag (not adjustable).
The included pamphlet is useful as a quick reference, but does contain some technique specific contradictions to professional fly fishermen.
The 3 section pole is easy to store anywhere, and the eylets were clean and free of obstruction.
Would have liked to received a variety of sample flies in the kit rather than just poppers, but overall, not bad.
This is a cheap fly rod, and you're getting what you're paying for. I've fished with much better quality rods, and I recommend talking to a professional before making an investment into something like this. That said, I've caught about 200 cutthroats and rainbows with this setup, using custom flies. If you're concerned about whether or not it will catch fish, it will. For beginners, it's going to be more frustrating than it's worth. Don't even bother using the flies that come with it. For someone with some fly fishing experience under their belt, you can make this rod work if you know what you're doing. For beginners, go to an actual fly/tackle shop a few times, talk to people who know what they're doing, and save up for something better worth your time. I'll keep this rod around as an extra, but it will not be my go-to tool compared to other rods.
After assembling the rod and picking the first fly to use, I ran into my first problem. Every eyehole on every fly was painted over. I had to put a hook through the eye just to run a line through the fly. These flies are definitely mass produced, and there was no care in making them. Just slab on paint and go. Then the rod came apart twice within the first couple casts. On the first fish I caught, the clear floating line snapped. Really? It snapped on a large brim. Thank goodness it wasn't a bass! Between the number of line snags in the reel, save your money and invest in a nicer rod, I am returning mine asap!
