this knife is tough, sharp, and tactical. the blade is good for cutting and pucturing. after lots of use of constant cutting the paint will come off but not the edge, its all a part of earning its stripes. its a really dependable in so many ways not to mention that the handle of the knife has a lanyard hole which in an emergency can be used to hammer or use it as a non lethal weapon. overall it earns its name as an ak 47
I have quite a few knives and had my eye on this one for awhile because it blends a lot of my favorite features. Andrew Demko did a fine job on this design and Cold Steel delivers on quality and value as usual.
I've EDC'd a CS Spartan for two years, so by comparison the AK feels like a feather. The aggressive G-10 grip and handle shape provide the securest purchase that I've experienced with a folder.
The thumb-stud that doubles as a pocket "wave" feature is awesome! The thing is literally FASTER than a switch-blade!
My only complaint is the black teflon blade coating. It's kind of shiny and cheap looking, and almost immediately began wearing off. Cold Steel should really figure out a better alternative. Maybe a titanium-nitrate similar to that used by SOG. If they fix that, we're talking PERFECTION!
The knife is tough as nails and will not disappoint! Sharp as a razer (or sharper) and with the tri-ad locking mechanism, this knife will not fail on you. very satisfied and considering buying the AK mini. Cold steel is a great brand and does NOT disapppint.
This AK-47 is the new GEN 2 (made after 2010) offering based on the original AK-47 model, main difference is an updated locking mechanism, which is supposed to be stronger. It takes some force to depress the lock release, (which is located on the middle spine of the handle) and release the blade, so it will not close up easily. A good safety feature IMO, but hard on the thumb! The older model AK-47 lock had the release lever on the side of the handle which could possibly catch on something and unlock the blade while in your hand! I can see why they would update heir design.
The blade is AUS8A steel, hollow ground and has a nice uniform black coating and arrived shaving sharp!
The strike pommel is also an excellent touch and one of the reasons I chose this blade. It will come in handy if you ever need to strike glass. I also love the G10 handle on this knife, it has a very aggressive "tread" pattern and is extremely grippy!
The "pocket snag" on the base of the blade spine also works beautifully. The pocket clip (knife comes with a spare), which is extremely though and has a strong grip, rides low enough as to allow enough gripping surface of the handle to be exposed from your pocket and allow quick, safe deployment of the blade. Nothing cooler than pulling your knife out and having it snap open as you clear the pocket! Ready for use! The pocket snag can also be removed if you don't want that feature on the knife. Either way, you can still remove the knife from your pocket without snagging it open.
Overall a great blade, the practical knife user will not be disappointed with this!! Only downside is that the GEN 2 models do not come with an aluminum handle option, only the G10, which may be a deciding factor for some. Also there is no serrated blade offered and the blood groove is absent on this newer model (stronger without it, IMO.)
This pocket knife comes paper cutting sharp right out of the box. It cuts through box tape like you are cutting air. It has a nice feature known as the thumb plate. You just snag the thumb plate on the edge of your pocket and you can open the knife as you pull it out of your pocket. The G-10 handle is a comfortable grip that also provides great traction. The pommel has a lanyard hole for those who like to attach lanyards to their knives. The knife comes with an extra pocket clip so that you can have the clip on either side of the knife, which is great for both left and right handed users. On a similar note, the thumb plate extends out on both sides making is easy for both left and right handed users to open the knife. This is an excellent everyday carry knife.
This knife is awesome...it is big enough to be used for multiple cutting uses...the grip feels natural in the hand and the blade sits just right for cutting, the knife is big enough to be used for defense but it is light enough to not drag your pocket down using it for EDC ( every day carry)
Wonderful knife for about half the price of retail.
A great knife. I have 2. ANYTHING COLD STEEL IS GREAT.
