The main reason we purchased the cedar mulch was to keep the bugs away from our house and out of the garden. As far as I'm concerned, it does the job as expected. As for the smell, well that's just the smell of cedar and it only smells for a day or two. If you're looking for mulch to just look nice, then you may want to look to the other types. We are quite happy with this cedar mulch, it keeps the bugs away, helps to keep weeds down and looks nice.
My bags in comparison looked very trashy, but needed just a few more and stopped at Wal-Mart. I had large handfuls or chunks of clay in a bag; one of three, and small ones in the other.
I realize Atlanta, GA has clay where this notably came from, however; that is not what I wanted to buy. Wal-Mart had great [non-colored] cedar mulch four [+ years] ago, then none, not one bag for a while in plain cedar; now this, and it is terrible. The price is way too much for the quality. I settled due to location. I have not gotten the stinky smell yet, but will be watching! I am very disappointed.
I would put more, but the terms and agreement are strict here...
Mulch usually smells like chopped wood. This mulch smells horrible! It smells like cow manure and the smell is going to ruin my 4th of July BBQ! I really wish I stuck with the more expensive brands I usually buy.
