I bought this because my active DVI CAT5e extender stopped working(old). I'm extending a 23" Apple Cinema Display about 35ft from my Mac G5. I'm already pre-wired with both solid CAT5E UTP and CAT5E STP but the UTP produced some unwanted on-screen artifacts and the STP had blinking/flashing issues. Cables may be at fault also. I went to my local electronics store and bought solid CAT6 UTP(35ft), a 10-pack of CAT6 RJ45 unshielded plugs and a crimp(RJ45) and made my own CAT6 cable to length. Everything works perfectly! My resolution is set to 1920 X 1200 and is crystal clear! Making cables isn't for everyone so if you buy pre-made, make sure the CAT6 is solid core. That's the biggie. I've read quite a few reviews which state failure at lower resolutions and longer distances. Most folks don't have a clue as to the differences between solid and stranded cable or even shielded or unshielded. The difference in price between this passive extender and the active extenders is huge. One last thing, I needed a DVI gender changer also as the GVE 200 transmitter and receiver are both male ended. Makes no sense to me but something else to be aware of. These are relatively cheap also.
