Wow. That is all I have to say about this laptop. I bought it at Walmart for $498, took it home and it was set up in twenty minutes. I am writing on it right now. Although I DO believe it is a value, that doesn't mean it is a compromise of features for a lower price. It is a top-of-the-line laptop with a bottom-of-the-line price. It looks like it cost as much as Macbook pros.
I am a freshman at a university and I bought this laptop for school. It was one of the best decisions I could have made.
Something I have heard others complain about it hitting the touchpad while typing and that hasn't happened to me, but if it happens to you, you can double tap the light in the corner of the touchpad to temporarily disable the touchpad while you type, then double tap again to reactivate. The touchpad is excellent, it comes with vertical scrolling enabled, and if you go to START, CONTOL PANEL, HARDWARE AND SOUND, and under DEVICES AND PRINTERS click MOUSE then click the DEVICE SETTINGS tab on the right you can enable horizontal scrolling and see the other features. It does not have pinch zoom, but you can tap to click and drag, so theoretically you can use this computer for years without clicking the mouse buttons, unless you need to right click. Some complain about how the mouse buttons are stiff. I beg you to understand that this is because it is new. Give it a week or two and it will soften up. And if it bothers you that much, just tap the touchpad instead of clicking. Some people also overlook the fact that it is an HD screen. But you must have HD content (a DVD for example) for it to work, though. But it looks great! It also comes with YouCam, which is a webcam-based photo fun software pre-installed. It is better than Apple's Photobooth! I could play on it for hours. The HP support assistant already on the computer is also very helpful, it stops me from downloading any type of malware.
My internet connection took less than twenty seconds the first time I tried. I was amazed. usually it is so difficult. Just have your network name and password with you when you turn on your computer.
The Altec Lanting speakers are amazing quality, and they can get really loud if you blast it, they also sound just like a TV, so don't worry about poor sound quality. I have watched several movies already, they all look AND sound great!
Windows 7, amazing, enough said. If you haven't experienced it yet and have a bad taste in your mouth from Vista, GIVE IT A CHANCE. It is an amazing blend of classic windows and it reminds me of Mac OS X, it is very simple and the task bar is so neat and pretty.
As a side note, I recommend the Google Toolbar on IE8, very simple to download and loaded with features. Also, one thing I want everyone to know: this laptop does NOT come with a side number pad! I always use the numbers on the top of the regular keyboard anyway, so it never bothered me, but if you do, maybe go to walmart and have a look at the keyboard in person so you can see if you will survive. If it is that big of a deal to you, or if you are an accountant or accounting major, many companies sell USB number pads. It is JUST like the side number pad you are used to and it is connected to a USB cable so you can have it right next to your mouse when you need it and disconnect it when you don't.
I hope this was helpful, this laptop is incredible and I URGE you to buy it! You will not find a better deal for a better machine. I also urge owners to watch the Windows 7 tutorials to see cool things you can do that you wouldnever have known without watching!
