This product appeared to be the perfect solution to keeping my cell phone and laptop charged while on the road. I purchased this product with the confidence established by buying Stanley tools for years with resulting better than average satisfaction. This product has changed my confidence level in Stanley products substantially, because: This inverter would not charge cell phone directly:
• My cell phone appeared to not recognize the USB connectivity provided and therefore would not be recharged.
• To charge my phone required moving the USB cable to one of the USB ports on the laptop.
This inverter would not charge laptop battery 100%:
• The laptop battery status app would never indicate more than 97% charged after many hours of use on the road.
Concerns about doing damage to my cars:
Plug to Receptacle Interface (in spite of adjustability of the plug):
• The 12V plug is overly tight and you may cause damage to the 12V receptacle if the receptacle is not of robust construction!
• It is obvious inserting and removing needs to be performed with care and fear of doing damage.
• I have real concerns about long term repeated insertion and removal operations of this 12V plug.
• I do not believe the plug has to be that tight:
o I have used many 12V plugs for other products repeatedly at the same price point, which insert easily, work reliably and do not cause concerns about long term use effects on my cars interfaces.
Ease of Access to Receptacle Spaces Provided:
• The size and shape of the unit may not fit or fit easily into to many of the spaces provided for 12V receptacle use without similar interfacing issues. I returned the product to the store and they exchanged it cheerfully, but the second unit performed exactly the same as the first product had. Determining what tests I should make before implementing my next purchase:
I therefore took the time to perform the following test before returning the replacement product for a refund:
• Input voltage:
o I tested both cars’ receptacles used with both devices and the voltage supplied to the inverters meet or exceeded the required 13.8 volts DC specified.
o The voltages supplied by the cars were fine.
• Available Current:
o Both cars’ receptacles had the standard 12V120W ratings, which at the standard float voltage of modern vehicles is about 8.5 Amps and is.5 amps more than the specified requirement.
• Output voltage:
o Voltage was well below rating specified of 110-125 volts AC
o When the charger was unloaded, a digital voltmeter indicated slightly less than 100V
o With the laptop being charged the voltage ranged between 100V and almost 105V
o These output voltages were intuitively low! If I had a 110V outlet in the house with this low of a reading, I would be trying to find the problem and fix it.
o Low voltage readings are usually a warning sign for possible equipment overheating and/or failure. Additional Concerns (something apparently was going on with my cell phone and the Inverter USB port):
My cell phone and inverter #1:
o When I was getting ready to return my original purchase to the store, I wanted to make sure I was using the inverter correctly (good electrical connects in a tight almost doesn't fit interface situation#.
o I tested with two receptacles in one car and one receptacle in another car
o I also tested with one receptacle in each care using a flexible 12V adapter
o All tests did not include voltmeter tests at that time
o All test results were the same as my first couple of days on the road.
o However, my cell phone started acting strange and seem not to want to charge correctly anymore. By the time I had the replacement inverter in hand the phone battery had failed #the phone would no longer recognize any kind of a charger) and had to be replaced.
My cell phone and inverter #2:
o The new battery had been installed and the phone was responding correctly to all the chargers I had once again.
o After I tested the cell phone with inverter #2, which was the deciding factor that the problem was a design issue and not an out of the box failure. So, I was making arrangements to get a refund the next day. Meanwhile, I notice my phone was acting strange again.
o I had to remove and replace the battery in the phone, restart the phone and only charge the phone from by laptop PC for the better part of a day.
o I am still trying to determine if the battery or phone is going to make it.
