For all you "piston heads" and battery officionados, this is the charger for you -- really. It is, indeed, not too well explained in much detail on W-mart's site, so here goes. It is a fully automatic and amazingly sensitive and accurate device: easy to use and to understand.
I am using it on a set of 6 volt golf cart batteries wired in series equalling 12volts (the unit is a 12 volt only charger). The box and instuctions indicate it is engineered for deep-cycle, AGM and gel type batteries -- as well as many other types.
When charging the LCD indicates the amount of charge in amps being placed in the battery.
It gradually decreases as the battery come up to charge -- a nice taper charge. During the charge cycle, the unit intermitently interupts the charge to relax the battery -- a taper charger with a pulse mode, that's really sweet. When full charge was achieved and indicated on the charger's LCD, I double checked that indication with an accurate hydrometer and the charger did, in fact, stop charging just a bit past the hydrometer's (specific gravity) indication of a full charge.
In addition, while charging, with the push of a button, you can check the input voltage to ensure that the unit has not gone too high -- for me, it maintained a constant 12.3 to 12.6 volts of input -- a nice, battery friendly voltage. A very tolerable db cooling fan cycles on and off during the charge cycle -- mostly on but not too annoying in db..
Once charged, the unit goes into a "float" mode which monitors the battery's state of charge and occassionally give a 2 amp or below jolt of added surfice charge. It keeps my deep-cyclers at a consistant 13.4 to 13.5 volts.
Hope your experience is as good!
PS. Dear Wal Mart internet officials: Better and more technically specific web descriptions will most likely increase sales of products like this and, ultimately, save greatly on returns and related handling cost. Maybe a small department that reviews the owners manuals (or even tests the products performance) before ofering it on the site. Kind of a Wal-Mart consumer recomended product rating or such. Nevertheless, thank you for offering it on your site.
