Works as Expected
Just in case of California PG&E PSPS I bought this generator back in Sep 2020. One month later, I had to use this unit for the power outage. I bought this unit based on the great reviews online, also had to wait for Lowes's to restock the unit. So going in I had high expectations for the igen4500. All I can say is I'm not disappointed. This unit works as I expected. After following the clear instructions that came with the unit, I ran it for 4 hours the 1st day and then 10 hours straight the 2nd day. The unit was able to power the 2 refrigerators and 1 small freezer we had. I also had my internet modem, computer and couple of lights hooked up to it at the same time. Without this unit, we would not be able to work and attend school online. Very happy with the purchase so far.
This is my first generator and will be my only. I reviewed for 3 months on which one to purchase and this met all my needs. I did sacrifice ease of portability as this model is heavy but thats just means I need to stay in shape. Thansk Westinghouse for a great product.
Started right up, and quiet!
After being on back order for much of the summer 2020, as soon as we received the email that it was again available, we ordered immediately. It was on our doorstep 2 business days later. Unpacked easy, simple start up instructions, and started on first push. Been running a couple of hours to break it in, drawing various items. All's looking good.
Bought for use with our toy hauler RV w/ 15k AC, and also as home backup (have 7 fridges/freezers).
Just bought this after being left in the dark for 4 nights during a storm. We live in a townhouse and needed a quieter generator and this one is perfect! Has great features and easy setup out of the box. Stores nicely in our garage.
Nice and Quiet
Would not crank out of the box. Had to take panels off to get to the electric start module to reconnect the electric choke wire. Once connected the engine started right away. Has been running fine ever since. Pulls my camper air conditioner and all the lights at 25% load. Plenty of generator for my needs.
At least it runs
I ordered the iGen4500DF in early June and it finally arrived in late October. I added oil and hooked up the battery and ran the generator on propane. The generator ran fine and started with both the start button on the control panel and the remote. I removed the access panel to look at the air cleaner and noticed that one of the plastic tabs used to hold the panel in place had broken and was still in place in the rubber grommet which retains the tab when the panel is closed. I have added a couple photos of the broken tab. I am disappointed that this broke the very first time I removed the access panel, I hope the rest of the generator holds up much better than the panel did! Time will tell whether the generator turns out to be a good reliable piece of equipment.
Seems like a good inverter. Tweak some details.
This seems like a good inverter. Starts easily, runs quietly, good indicators, etc. There are a couple of manufacturing details that could use some attention. First, plastic openings (oil, battery) have sharp edges that will scratch up your hands when you're maneuvering in them. Second, instructions CLEARLY say to pour entire oil bottle in. Given how difficult it is to get to the oil plug/dipstick, I decided I'd go with those instructions. Definite overfill if you follow that guidance. Start with about 3/4 of the bottle. Third, the propane inlet is a brass fitting that requires a tight seal. The plastic housing cover was not squarely installed and part of it is over the edge of the inlet, making it a bit precarious to ensure the right seal.
QUICK SETUP & FAST START
TOOK ONLY 20 MINUTES TO ADD OIL, CONNECT BATTERY & HOOKUP PROPANE TANK. STARTED IMMEDIATELY. RAN FOR TWO HOURS WITH INTERMITTENT 1650w LOAD. INTEND TO ONLY USE PROPANE; NEVER GASOLINE. WITH 1650w LOAD & ECON MODE ON, SEEMED LOUDER THAN SPEC.
TOP OF GAS REGULATOR WAS COMPLETELY CORRODED & ALL SCREWS WERE RUSTED, WHICH I HAVE REPORTED TO WESTINGHOUSE; CASE PENDING
Started right up and run our fifth wheel. Will know more as we get some time on the unit. We really like the small size, it fits nicely in our front bay.
Hoping for a reliable unit after rocky start.
Unit came with automatic choke issues, as detailed in previous reviews. Mine was no exception. I have a lifetime of small engine repair experience. After tearing unit down was able to identify the poor connection on starter module. Works fine now. Would be an issue if new owner was expecting unit to start and run without two hours of shop time invested. Zip tied wire to avoid strain on connection, connected to starter module, and applied a drop of hot glue to connection retention clip to secured during any vibration. Looking forward to many years of service. Plugged in my 26' TT, ran AC and all appliances, generator did it's job. Thanks.
First the good: This thing is so quiet you can stand next to it and have a conversation. I put my sound meter next to it and got low 60s decibels, that is about the level of a conversation. Compare to my 6000W monster at mid-70s which you have to shoot over (mid-70s is like sitting in heavy traffic). Push button start, remote start, easy to maneuver with the retractable handle, all good stuff. Haven't plugged the camper into it yet but have no doubt she can handle it and I won't be drowning out the neighbors.
So the not-so-good: it arrived damaged. No apparent damage on the box. I was on the lookout for that after seeing other reviews. The damage is to a bracket on one of the side panels that holds the threads for the back panel to screw into. It was completely snapped off. I have a support request into Westinghouse so if that resolves then it is 5-star! The only other "could be better" is if the oil plug was a little farther out so that spilled oil didn't sit in the housing and it might be easier to do an oil change. They do give you a nice funnel to make it work but there is still a little spilling. Super minor
I just got this today through FedEx and I am so excited. I added oil, connected the battery, and added gasoline. I slowly pulled the starting cord just to get the oil moving around before I actually started the generator. After that I turned it on and used the remote start to start the generator and wow!! It immediately fired up and was soooo quiet it surprised me. I’ve read a ton of reviews on many inverter generators and this seemed to be the best for the wattage output. I can not wait to hook it to our camper this weekend. I am beyond excited about this generator, it seems very well built and I haven’t seen one blemish on it yet so far like some have seen when they unboxed it. I’m impressed so far and so are the kids and wife lol.
Quirt, remote start love the color
I just received this a couple of days ago and the set up was easy. i connected it to propane turn on the switch pushed the remote start and it came to life. Add a 1000w load and let it run for 20min for a test run. post the remote off and it shutdown. Did a video and sent to my other family members. This will be great for over night fishing.
Compact and QUIET!
I researched generators for our Toy Hauler for over a year and finally decided on this Westinghouse iGEN4500DF. The dual fuel is perfect! Easy start up and operation. VERY quiet. Weighs under a hundred pounds so can be lifted and moved with ease. Even easier with the pull out handle that makes it as easy as pulling my old little red wagon! All controls and indicators are easily read and understood. Very well engineered! Works great with our 30 AMP RV hook up. In future, will be off road boondocking for sure!
Nice machine, a few setup problems.
There is a spacer between the oil drain plug and the crankcase. The spacer is threaded into the crankcase and allows the draining oil to fall thru a hole in the bottom of the outer housing of the generator. On setting up the new machine, I decided to check the tightness of the drain plug. The plug was tight. The spacer - not so much. Just a bit more than finger tight, very little pressure on a small wrench and it was loose. I fear if I hadn't checked it, I could have lost all engine oil while running. Hopefully the "low oil" sensor would have shut the generator down before any damage was done.
Also, reinstalling the drain plug is a royal pain. A red wire to the starter passing over the drain plug is not helpful, a longer bit of wire rerouted would make a big difference.
I think we will like this generator and that it will serve us well. Quality assurance (read: tight drain plugs) and a little more thought on engineering would be more satisfying.
I bought generator to power 34ft travel trailer. It runs entire camper with ease. Very quiet and able to run my one ac. Hopefully lasts for a long time.
The only reason I did 4 stars is because it had some kind of a leak on top where you put gas. Unsure if it has some gas but other than that. It works great
Bought this to power my 33ft 5th wheel when I'm not plugged into shore power and this generator works like a charm. Plenty of power, great features and remote start!
Did not work
The product had plugs not in place...and did not work. Known issues online - I bought this to use during a critical power outage and I would expect 100% usability.
I bought for my Rv. Took out of box followed the set up instructions. Would not start. Had to take side cover off to manually choke. When removing side cover found screw in lower left corner stripped. Finally got started. Runs great.
