This is the first Lego we have bought for our 1 year old daughter and it is proving to be a real favourite with longevity. My husband often espouses Lego as his favourite childhood toy so when I saw this in the toy store a week before our little one's birthday I thought "perfect"! And is has been. She has been watching the Toy Story ebook on the iPad regularly and loves it so she recognised the characters straight away and we all sat down on the ground and played with this and another TS Lego set together for quite some time. Although she cannot yet click the pieces together she seems to very much enjoy taking anything I build apart. Apart from the obvious benefits of imagination, creativity and motor control, I can see this as being something we can all play with together which is great for bonding. I genuinely enjoy the satisfying 'click' from building things with the pieces. That being said I think you could get this from any of the sets, not just this one, but the TS characters add a sense of familiarity and fun. Furthermore, being a one year old (with 8 teeth so far), our daughter has chewed on all of the pieces somewhat and in particular the character pieces, and yet after a month they all still look brand new. Very few of her other toys have the same durability. Impressive. I hope they continue to remain in such great condition. In summation I am sold on lego and already have a few more sets stashed away for Christmas! They do seem expensive toys but you do get what you pay for - quality and value for money.
My 3 yo son was overjoyed at getting this set, he really wanted a Toy Story set before now, but the previous ones were all for older kids. This set has enough bricks to build a few different simple structures and the truck parts are interchangeable with other Duplo trucks and semis. He loves the rocket brick that he puts on Buzz's back for flying. This set has been played with daily and fits in well with other Duplo sets to expand on builds.
If you are a fan of any of the toy Story Movies then this set is a really good bet. Although it doesn't have Woody or Jessie, the two characters it does feature (Buzz and green Alien) are top notch. We have the duplo and regular lego lines at our house and I think the Duplo lines are superior in this case.
Alien in duplo has bendy legs so he can sit down. Lego alien minifig does not have bendy legs. Duplo Buzz doesn't have a cool clear helmet (something that would have been nice) but I've found the lego minifig helmet on Buzz keeps popping off.
Finally the pizza truck - the lego version has cool pizza's that shoot out and this Duplo one doesn't but the lego one is very fragile and difficult to actually play around with where the Duplo truck is sturdy.
Although Lego says 2-5 for Duplo and 6+ for lego, I think in this case the Duplo could go a bit older because they are easier to play with. Plus if you buy the green army men minifigs they are closer to scale with the Duplo characters than the lego minifigs.
We gave this set to a grandchild (4 yrs) this past weekend. She loved it. She's a huge fan of Toy Story and has lots of Buzz and Woody related toys.
The gas pump theme of the set didn't matter so much, it was the Buzz and alien in a truck that she loved. This truck has seen plenty of miles across the carpet since then. A little cheaper would have been better. But, a great set for young kids..
OK, let's cut straight to the point. This isn't exactly a challenging set, I mean, it's for kids 5 and under. The build is very simple, but what impressed me the most was the durability of the pieces. I bought this set for my cousin in law's 2 yr old boy. It kept him entertained for the whole afternoon. And of course, being a 2 yr old, he didn't exactly treat the pieces with care. And by that I mean, they went flying around the room for most of the day. I was sure that the car at least, was going to crack. At the end of the day, I examined the pieces. Not one crack or dent. I was impressed. I also learned something else that day. I am probably one of the greatest complainers when it comes to the cost of Lego toys. Let's face it, compared to a lot of other toys on the market, it's not cheap. But I also know that just about any other toy on that day would have either cracked, broken or smashed. The lesson - Lego is a very good quality toy, that's why it costs more but you know what? At the end of the day, it's worth it. Keep up the exceptional quality Lego - and if means I have to pay more, then so be it.
