It’s been almost a month since I bought the Swann Alpha D3C5. First let me say why I bought this system. I picked the system I could upgrade later with different cameras. The 8-channel capability helps in the future. Only having 4 cameras covers the main areas of the house I need at this moment. Later I can get indoor cameras that blend with the indoor atmosphere better or upgrade the outdoor.
The system was so easy to install the primary installation was done without reading the directions. Once it was installed I opened the book and finished hooking the system into the Internet. It took about 15 minutes for Internet service once I read the directions.
The only problem I have is the night vision. Again that’s why I bought the four-camera version. I did install some ultraviolet lighting to the side of the house. This adds to the night vision greatly without lighting up my neighbors’ bedroom. Be sure to adjust the cameras for night vision (brightness and contrast). Right out of the box they need some adjustment for the area you install them.
All in all a much better system then I first thought. A little adjustment to the cameras and the nice feature of motion detection I am VERY pleased. I hope to install the indoor cameras when the time comes.
After six months use I'm still pleased. It was easy to setup and the options of this Swann DVR provide versitality. The cameras have good resolution. It also works well with the Samsung cameras that I had from my previous setup. Though it was a challenge to get the rj12 connectors from the Samsung adapted to BNC on the Swann unit. The one problem I had was mobile monitoring with a Nexus tablet. I used the Swann Pro app from Play Store. I finally found that when using the 18004 port with "admin" as a login do not use a password. Also reboot after changing port numbers. The Netviewer software that's included works well on a PC laptop. I haven't been able to access the DVR on the web without using Swann's Netviewer. Overall it's a good product. I plan to buy another one for my vacation home.
