I bought this book after hearing a comedian I like mention that, while not perfect, Judy Carter's books are a way to get yourself thinking about the craft of stand-up comedy.
He was right, but man, this book was a slog. For every beneficial exercise or piece of information Ms. Carter gives you there are at least 5 anecdotes about what established comedians have done. Not short ones either, entire paragraphs dedicated to telling you that the creators of Seinfeld did something similar to one of the exercises.
It's exhausting pushing through all the mindless filler to get to the actual writing exercises. But once you do you'll find that there are actually a few good ideas to get your creative juices flowing. They're just buried in irrelevant pull-quotes and bullet points about M*A*S*H.
