I was an instant fan of the original 1974 "Taking", which at the time was one of the most gripping psychological thrillers released, even though I first saw it on network TV years after its theatrical release. The 2009 version, though quite exciting and fast paced, does not live up to the psychological part, and in my opinion its story lines and plot devices pale in comparison to Joseph Sargent's original masterpiece. Hard to imagine that Tony Scott chose to stray so far from Sargent's original plot and underlying themes, which were so brilliant, but he does. As far as I'm concerned, this contributes much to the complete detriment of this film. This film does however, make for good accompaniment to popcorn munching if you never saw the original, and if you've got really good popcorn. If you did see the original, the ending especially will leave you totally unsatisfied. That is, provided John Travolta's over the top portrayal of the original "Mr. Blue" character hasn't already left you bewildered and dismayed.
