I like this camera for a number of reasons. First, it's a camera and a camcorder. The still images are good. Maybe not as good as true camera, but very good. The HD video quality is nice and it's easy to pull off the SD card. The camera takes streams of pictures, which is a nice featrue. And it's good in low light, another feature that's hard to find. Battery life is good. I have not tried it underwater, but I have good expectations. As far as the bad...The buttons are a little small and hard to find in the dark. Maybe a little confusing at first, too. The gun-type style makes it feel al ittle like a toy, too. But still very practical.
I'm a professional photographer and I know junk results when I see them. This thing provides the most disappointing photos/video of any digital camera I've ever tested. Yes, it looks cool, yes it functions fairly well, but the images are so over-processed that my 2mp cell phone camera pics look better! I returned it and got a waterproof, shockproof, 12mp, hi-def video Panasonic Lumix TS1 instead. It rocks- and for the same price!
This camera isn't overloaded with features, but for the size and the price it does a good job. I bought this camera for my wife and she loves it. It does very well at ballgames as it's small enough to put in her purse without having to take along a seperate camera bag. We have used it to record our kids' sporting events and haven't had any trouble at all with it. The clarity is good and the waterproof feature comes in handy during football season when rain becomes an issue. The memory card is easily transferred from the camera to my PC and makes for fast download and storage of my video and also for burning to DVD. If you want a good, basic video camera with good picture and simple operating functions, you can't beat this one for the price! You can watch sample videos to get an idea of the picture quality on YouTube. . . Just do a search for "Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA9". That's how I made the decision to purchase mine!
This is the only waterproof camera i have found that takes both HD video(720p) and 9 MP pictures. It works ok, its easy to use but takes a long time between pictures. The pictures are pulled off the video sensor and come in up to 9MP(they can also do 12 but its a simulated 12) but they just dont seem the same as other digital cameras. The videos are great compared to a normal camera, but the pictures are worse than my old 5MP camera. The settings are difficult to access on the go(where you will be actually using them) and there arent many picture settings. The biggest problem I had was that after a few weeks, the pictures and videos started looking like i applies a watercolor filter. Nothing i did to the camera, including a reset fixed the 1MP pics it was putting out. It probably wasnt worth the 300 bucks i paid for the overpriced camera, even though i go outdoors a lot and need waterproof video. I personally would suggest maybe trying it, but keeping the receipt. For the price you can get a lot of better still cameras, or video cameras. I am going to return mine and buy something else.
