Amadeus is great, and so is this DVD for the most part. This is the theatrical version of the film (which was rated PG, Wal-Mart incorrectly labels it with an R rating), and having seen the directors cut I could say that the 20 minutes tacked on in that version isn't worth paying extra.
This is a great, great film, period. As long as you appreciate DVDs without the usual protected case and having to turn over the disc halfway through, you should enjoy this DVD.
Wal-Mart doesn't rate this particular DVD correctly. This is the theatrical release and is rated "PG-13" (the longer, 2-Disc, Director's Cut, released a few years later later was rated to "R"). Benefit of this release is the full 5.1 Soundtrack included (the Director's Cut does not have the soundtrack). Negative: You must flip the disk half-way through the movie and this is a single-disc release. The missing scenes in the Director's Cut (not included in the theatrical release) have to do with an attempted seduction of Mozart's wife. As a family man, I far prefer having the soundtrack to exposing my family to a yet another seduction scene that adds virtually nothing to the movie.
Amadeus is an all around great film. Very well written and directed. The casting is perfect, as is the portrayal of each of the central characters. The scenery is beautiful, the music breath-taking. It tells an amazing story, while staying well focused on Mozart's music. I watched(and loved!!) it for the 1st time when I was only 11 yrs. old, and still enjoy it with my teenager today.
