Bothered by crawling insects such as bed bugs, ants, earwigs, cockroaches, silverfish, crickets, fleas, millipedes or centipedes? Then Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth Powder Ant, Crawling Insect, Bed Bug Killer - 4 lbs. is the solution for you, and it is reviewed and listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI). The Safer Brand Ant and Crawling Insect Killer uses the power of diatomaceous earth (silicon dioxide) to kill a wide variety of crawling insects. Safer® Brand Ant and Crawling Insect Killer comes in a powder form that provides you with two forms of protection against crawling insects. First, if the pest ingests the diatomaceous earth, they will die within 48 hours of ingestion. The second method is that when the insect crawls through diatomaceous earth, it will cut their exoskeleton, which releases their vital moisture within their body, causing them to dehydrate and die.

But the best part about Safer® Brand Ant and Crawling Insect Killer is that insects can not become immune to this solution. Finally, there is an organic solution to crawling insects that they can not become immune and will provide you with lasting protection.

Directions for use: Indoor Use: Coat a thin layer in the areas where these pests are found or may hide such as cracks and crevices, behind and beneath stoves, refrigerators, sinks, cabinets, garbage cans, around pipes and drains, window frames, and in attics and basements. You can also apply this product directly to insects where possible. Repeat treatment as necessary. For Bed Bugs: Option 1: 1. Take bed apart 2. Coat a thin layer of Ant and Crawling Insect Killer into joints and channels 3. If hollow such as a square or round tubing, see that the interior of the framework is well dusted. 4. Mattresses should be dusted, especially tufts, folds and edges. 5. Picture frame moldings and all cracks/crevices in the room should be treated Option 2: 1. Dump approximately 2 inches worth of Ant and Crawling Insect Killer Powder into 4 small dishes. 2. Place the legs of your bed inside the small dish so that they are resting inside the dish. 3. Ensure your bed is secure 4. When bed bugs try to crawl up your bed posts to feed on the host, they will be forced to go through the insect killer, which will in turn kill them by cutting their exoskeleton. This causes them to dry out and die. Outdoor Use: Lightly coat the areas where the pests are found or may hide including windows, door frames, sills, and outside of entrance ways. Repeat treatment as necessary. Apply on days in which there is no rain prevalent as this solution works best when kept dry. Safer® Brand is the recognized leader in organic insect control and organic gardening products.

I had a really bad cockroach infestation. I was given this stuff by a friend when nothing else the landlord used had worked. (After a while, the landlord had even given up. I mean the infestation was HORRIBLE. My ceiling was black with bugs. And everything the landlord used seemed to make the little buggers multiply. *Tried Raid & Black Flag*) But my friend told me to put this stuff around baseboards and along the windowsills and it would kill them by tearing up their bodies. It makes a little bit of a mess on clean up (I recommend wearing a fine particle mask and emptying your vacuum filters outside because it gets a bit dusty) but it killed the roach infestation to 99.1% clean of bugs before I moved out. (No, it wasn't my fault for the bugs. The people that lived there before me had kept them as pets and fed them and everything. And I moved for different reasons.) Once the bugs are dead, though, clean them up, put them in a bag and put them in the trash can outside, in case some of them aren't quite dead yet. It does a good job of killing spiders and ants, too. The food grade version is good for your digestive health. You can learn more about diatomaceous earth at diatomaceous.org in case you don't know what it does.

I bought this product for fleas. I have pets that can't tolerate spot treatment so I constantly battle fleas. I just bought it yesterday, so I don't have a complete review on the house and haven't spread it in the dog kennel as we've been having rain. I did use a little on one of my dogs to do a spot treatment. He is black with white on his chest and paws. I can see when fleas are on him in those areas so that's what I treated. This morning I saw one flea and it looked like it wasn't moving very well. I am very excited about the preliminary results. I am going to treat my pets today and see what happens. (I have read that it can dry you pets skin, so I will watch for that.) I'll add to my review what the results are.

This product is not only great for bed bugs, but kills other insects as well. My dog likes to roll in the field next to a pond in the neighborhood and brought in fleas. The DE has killed bed bugs, fleas, spiders, etc. I'll continue to use for maintenance but will buy from Home Depot instead. It's way cheaper than buying from Walmart.com and having to pay for shipping.

  • A. The only problem with putting it on carpet sect is that when you vacuum it gets into your lungs. Not a good thing to have in your lungs. Use a mask when you vacuum it up.

  • A. Yes, but vacuuming it up is a very dusty job. (I would wear a fine particle mask if you have asthma.)

  • A. Diatomaceous powder is basically the powdered, fossilized remains of hard-shelled algae (called diatoms), a microscopic aquatic plant. You can think of it as loosely analogous to a natural, powdered chalk. Some varieties of diatomaceous earth are also used as food additives ("food-grade diatomaceous earth"), and are supposed to be good for you, though a lot depends on the diatomaceous earth's grade and its additives (I'd consult the packaging to be sure); if in doubt, you might try food-grade diatomaceous earth (and only use diatomaceous earth marketed for pool filters in pool filters as intended, as those products are heavily processed and chemically treated!) Diatomaceous earth works as an insect killer by getting into the tiny joints and pores of an insect's exoskeleton (shell), and then ripping the insect's shell apart. Since humans and most pets do not have an insect exoskeleton (thank goodness!), diatomaceous earth cannot hurt you or your pets in this manner. So, in general, I would expect pure diatomaceous earth to be safe to put on your carpet in your house: it shouldn't be chemically reactive, shouldn't leave stains, shouldn't damage carpets, and should be comparable in effect to sprinkling powdered chalk onto your carpet. I have heard that diatomaceous earth can dry out skin, so I would certainly prepare to take precautions against that if used in any way that you would expect to come into direct and frequent contact with skin; I'd also avoid putting any powder in your pets' eyes or nose, and (as always) I would read all directions and warnings on the product packaging to make certain it does not contain any harmful additives or have any other warnings or cautions.

What is the other percentage in this safer product .diatomacious earth what is the other stuff by name please and what it does and is this safer product food grade?
by poppy 7/10/2014

  • A. Check out the web information on this. www.earthworks.com Food Grade DE and Crawling Insect Control DE often get confused with filter grade DE. Filter grade DE starts out as food grade, but it is heated to about 1,000 degrees and chemicals are added to crystallize it. This works great for filtering but is dangerous to people and animals. Breathing the crystallized product in over long periods of time causes a disease called silicoses. The world health org. has said that DE needs to be less than 2% crystalline silica in order to be considered safe. The filter grade DE is 60% crystalline!! -- Stay away from it --- it is dangerous!! Perma-Guards food grade DE and Crawling Insect Control DE on the other hand is less than .50% crystalline silica. As you can see, that is more than 4 times less than it needs to be to be considered safe! Daily use of Food Grade DE for people, pets and around the home is perfectly safe as is Crawling Insect Control DE for all your bug killing. Both products should be treated like any other dusty product, if you are going to breath it in over long periods of time, wear a dust mask ---- but it should in no way be compared to the dangerous crystallized filter grade.
