    Not a true mill

This is a grinder, not a true mill. It will NOT make flour. At best you get chicken feed out of it. Not too bad for oats but don't waste you time if you want to make your own flour. Find a real flour mill or you will be greatly disappointed. The grinder is fairly sturdy though it can wear you out trying to grind hard seed such as corn. There are other cheaper versions of this on other web sites that you will be even less happy with. If your goal is to grind then this should work for you. If your goal is to make flour then forget it.

I purchased this item to crush barley for brewing. It is what I expected, I'm getting about 70% efficiency.

My husband and I constructed a wooden platform to fit over a metal 55 gallon drum to attach the mill and also to hold and stabilize a electric drill. I installed a bolt in the hand of the mill and attached it to my drill with a socket. I took an old hand held socket type screwdriver to hook to my drill in case of a jam it would spin in my drill and not break the mill. It only took me about 15 minutes to make this jig and it sits on top of my 55 gallon drum. I set my mill for the correct cracked corn size and then turned on my drill and locked it into the on position. I can now just add corn and do not have to hold the drill. Even if my drill should ever come loose it can't go anywhere or hurt anything. I took an old 5 gallon plastic bucket and cut a section out for a splatter shield. Worked excellent!!! You could also take a 5 gallon bucket and cut hole in bottom and affix it above hopper to feed into the hopper. This is an economical mill that cracks corn for chickens very well. I believe it would make good corn meal also if the corn is ran thru it a couple more times at smaller grinds. One thing though. I did let it cool off about every 10 minutes or so to prevent overheating so as not to damage it. It cools quickly so this wasn't a problem. I am able to crack 350 pounds of corn in about an hour. Very inexpensive, held up well, and worked great for my purposes.

The mill works great for my purposes. I bought it to lightly grind malted barley for brewing beer. For this, it is superb! My son used the spent grains to make dog biscuits. I saw a comment on a brewing forum that said the unit smelled like diesel fuel. When I received mine, I noticed the same odor. However, the mill's instructions tell you to disassemble and thoroughly clean with warm, soapy water before first use. I disassembled, washed and placed all pieces except for the wooden handle in a 250°F oven for 30 minutes to dry and prevent rust... worked like a charm!

I bought this in order to crack grains to steep for home brewing. It works great for this purpose. The unit did have a slight oil smell to it, so I washed everything before use, but other than that, everything else is great. I would recommend this for the home brewer who needs an easier way to crack grains at an affordable price.

I took this back within an hour of getting it home and opening it. 1. The mill plates were not aligned properly 2. The mill plates did not adjust as they were supposed to 3. The handle would hardly stay on and did not connect well 4. The rubber pad for the clamp was missing As I said in the summary, Walmart should quit selling this product. Sell something of higher quality. This Weston grain mill is a real piece of junk. On the other hand, Walmart took this back without question. Customer service was really good.

I would rate this a 5 if the clamp was better constructed. The clamp does not provide a secure fit on any surface in my home. If it had drill holes in the base I'd put screws in it but no holes just a rubber cover that adds to the instability of the grip. Oh yeah the rubber cover doesn't fit! It does grind well. I'm taking it back and buying a more expensive brand that has a stronger more secure clamp.

Using the grinder to make corn meal for mush. Seams a little course yet even after running it through multiple times and on the tightest setting. Definitely would not make corn flour. Sturdy construction and easy assembly.

Purchased for milling barley for homebrewing. A few washers in between the plate cover and removal of the inner adjustment retaining ring = a surprisingly good crush. The outer plate is only a tiny bit wobbly but it still produced a reasonably consistent crush. The casting/machining on all the mill parts is atrocious. Seriously the worst produced product I've ever seen. The hopper needed some bending with a hammer to fit. All things considered it did perform well despite this.

    • A. Yes. You have to set it to a coarse setting and you will still get a small amount of flour. If you are doing All Grain BIAB you can grind fairly fine and get great efficiency! With BIAB you don't worry about a stuck sparge.

    • A. The burrs can be set quite far apart (enough to split dry soybeans without turning them into grits, for example), so cracking dried malted barley should not be a problem. But please understand, this mill is ONLY intended for DRY ingredients. Wet beans or grains will gum it up.
