I have purchased two 1TB; two 500GB; and one 320GB. They all work great and are so handy. I do video work and they are great for storage of large .avi files and very handy when I want to transfer some large files to another computer. I left off one star on the "Meets Expectations" rating because I had Walmart drop ship one to my 84 year old mother. WD factory did not line up the plastic chassis with the power and USB sockets in the unit. She had to go to the Walmart store where the service department happily exchanged the My Book for a new one. Now she's a happy WD My Book 500GB owner.

well i have only had it for a day so i cant account for durability but for 5 dollars you can get a warranty. but so far its great easy to set up easy to transfer files. and i searched around trying to find the best price and this is it. well unless you want the 1TB then that would be the best value its only thirty more then this one for a whole lot more memory but then the price of the warranty goes up to about 10 dollars.
Does exactly what it should.....
This product does exactly what it says it does... stores up to 500GB of anything....pictures, videos, music and more. Plus, it has a lock/unlock feature that keeps the drive protected even if your computer is hacked, crashes or becomes infected with malware/spyware. It is a bit larger than some other products available and for the 1TB Western Digital Model it is only about $30 more and twice the space. (That's why I gave 4 stars on value.) But for what I needed when I made the purchase, it definitely meets all my expectations! Oh, and setup is a cinch. There is a virtual disc on the drive that will guide you through all you need to do and know about your new hardware! Enjoy!
I purchased this drive for backups. I use Syncback backup software (free for home use) so I formatted this the drive to remove the included backup software and it works like any other external disk. Strangely, the disk appears twice in the device list, once as a disk and once as a cd drive - I ignore the cd drive. The drive goes to sleep when not in use, saving power.
External Hard Drive
First of all, it came within a couple days. It is very easy to use...just plug it in to a USB port and copy or cut ...then paste it into the the external hard drive. It got all of my pictures and documents off my computer. Whenever you want to use these things, just plug it in and it's all right there. Speeds up your computer...well worth the money.
Hard drive is fine, software worse than terrible
I made the mistake of allowing the SmartWare software to do its thing, including the virtual partition, etc, then backed up some of my stuff. The irritating categories and lack of actual file choice should have been a clue. And then I discovered there was no way to back up my wife's laptop over the network. And then I discovered that something (nothing else had been installed or changed) had messed all my settings for Adobe Photoshop CS4, Dreamweaver, and Bridge. It's the worst example I've ever seen of software that tells you how you MUST do things without giving you options, and then messes you up to boot. Luckily these have been out long enough, and WD has listened to the complaints, that they've developed a fix that will allow you to run it as just a regular external hard drive. I downloaded the fix, applied it, wiped the external drive and re-formatted it, and now it works like a dream with my Second Copy backup software. Note to Western Digital: Make a deal with Second Copy, it's what sofware should be.
