This is a very good steam humidifier which is 100 times better than normal Walgreens humidifier. It is also doing its job as described and not finding any major issues. After each night, we notice brown / black residue at the bottom of the bowl which forces us to change water everyday. Still don't know where and how the residue is forming :(

The first day of owning this unit, I couldn't get it to produce steam, even after adding a couple pinches of table salt. Left it on all night and by morning it started producing more steam. By late morning it was producing gobs of steam and hasn't stopped yet. I add about a gallon of water every 2 to 3 hours and rinse the black residue out every couple days. Happy with unit!

Simple and it works. Just filled it to say upto 2/3 of the container. Set the lid back and within minutes it started generating steam. The manual says if the steam does not get generated, then add small amount of salt to water in the container for it to generate steam. I did not have to add salt so far. My daughter has nose blockages and some time when the air gets too dry, she starts bleeding, with this the next morning she woke up without problems. I've had it for a week now and so far so good. Also this product is quite inexpensive. Glad I read the positive reviews and Thank you to all who posted their honest feed back. It mattered when I was looking for buying this product.

We've had one of these for about a year and a half. We love it so much that we purchased a second one so we can use one in each of our kids' rooms (because they're always sick simultaneously). This vaporizer works really well. It's quiet. It's easy to use (fill each night and plug in). Keeps my kids' rooms humid while they're sick. We've never used any Vicks as part of the device. Pretty sure that's a marketing ploy. The only con is that small, black chunks of something (minerals from the water?) always collect and float around in the water. They're easy enough to dump out, though. We've had humidifiers go moldy on us, though, so this feels like a small issue comparatively. I would absolutely recommend this to a friend, and I'd even purchase a third if I needed to do so.

I love these Vicks steam Vaporizers/humidifiers! I placed one in our bedrm and one in our den. My hubby has a lot of mucus in his throat and I thought this would help. It's been 3 days now and I've noticed less 'clearing of his throat' lately...wonderful! Easy to use. Just fill with hot water, I put about a T of vicks vaporub in water, screw on top til it locks and plug in. works great! we have hard water and never thought we'd be blessed with it, but hey, with using this it's an advantage! can't figure out why someone would complain about the light...it is very subtle and small. barely able to see. I love it that way. It is not glaring like others had reviewed. started steaming within the 10 mins. My hubby sits about 3 -4 ft from the vapors and it makes me feel great to know he is being soothed. worth the moola. Shipped and here within 3 days!!! just couldn't believe it was here so quickley! buy it, you'll love it. Remember: it is almost 2 rulers in circumfrence and holds 1 1/2 Gal water. Med sized.. extra coupons and 2 vicks pad in each unit I bought...I tried the pads and they are too strong for us...I'll stick to a T of vicks vaporub in water:)

  • A. Depending on the hardness of your water and how much salt you added to the water it should take about 15 minutes.

  • A. It depends on the temp of the water, if you put in cold water straight from your kitchen sink, it may take 5 minutes. If you put in warm / hot water, the steam will come out within seconds. Keep in mind the unit has to heat up the water in order to produce water vapors.

  • A. So water in general is not pure. Water is the great solvent, meaning they dissolve a lot of things. You can not see it in the water but there is a lot of things dissolved in it. When you steam the water, what is dissolved in the water will not be included in the steam. The black stuff is just the residue, it is not mold or anything. Just clean it out. Also DO NOT USE DISTILLED WATER in a n effort to not have the black residue. Distilled water has no ions and thus there will be no steam created.

  • A. Nothing to worry over. It is the particles from the dirt and stuff in the air. If your using it often just rinse and change out the water after each use.To clean it you just set the middle part in a tupperware with some vinegar and water to soak for about ten minutes. Rinse with water and tap out the gunk the best you can. The bottom part you just rinse with some water and then dry. Put it up and it will be ready to go for the next flu season. Remember you wont always get all the gunk but its okay it wont harm you

  • A. Depends on the hardness of your water. Try a pinch or two. If you don't get steam, add more a pinch at a time until you get the steam you want. But note, it could take 10-15 minutes between additions for the results to show. It's a pain but you only have to do this trial and error process once and maybe not at all depending on your water.

  • A. Absolutely do NOT add water to the unit. The manufacturer specifically states NOT to use salt OR softened water (because of the salt-content in salt water). This is because the salt lowers the boiling point. (Ever salt your water on the stove to get it to boil sooner/quicker?) If you use salt or softened water, the water will BOIL too easily/quickly and instead of the quiet sound the unit typically makes, you may now hear the sound of BOILING WATER. The unit is controlled to NOT give off too much steam at a time...it's a safety feature. Regular tap water (UN-softened) is ideal.

  • A. The instructions make recommendations as to the salt but it depends on your water. If you have hard water you may not need salt. If your water is pretty normal, you will probably only need a pinch. Just adjust the amount until you have nice steam coming out.

  • A. Start with a little and then see. The reason for the salt is because your water may not have enough ions. DO NOT USE DISTILLED WATER. Basically how this works is there are two probes in the vaporizer that conduct a electric charge. However, in order for the charge to run, they have to go through a medium ( like electricity running through a wire). If the water has no ions, then there is no medium.

  • A. I'd try a pinch of baking soda instead of salt. Start with a pinch, if it's not working in a few minutes, add another pinch until it works. The amount you need depends on the harness of your water.
