Reviewing the Vizio E70u-D3 70 inch 4K UHD TV with "SmartCast". The TV itself comes with no apps installed. None! The TV DOES have Wi-Fi and Blue-Tooth for interaction with the SMARTCAST app that must be first installed onto a smart phone or tablet. This TV is HUGE and HEAVY. The major down side is the necessity to use the SMARTCAST app installed on a device of your choosing. A smart phone, a tablet, which can connect to the internet AND also has Blue-Tooth on the phone or tablet. Upon initial TV power-up, in theory the TV should PAIR with the SmartCast app running on the phone or tablet, which trust me... it will not pair. The option will pop-up on the app to connect via WiFi instead of the Blue-Tooth. So just save yourself a lot of stress and initially connect the TV via Wi-Fi. The APP sends everything to the TV including settings and TV configuration. The TV remote itself has but a few buttons that basically turn on-off the TV. The SmartCast APP does it all. So if you cannot PAIR the phone or tablet via Blue-Tooth or via WiFi to the TV, you cannot do anything with this TV settings. Pairing with either Blue-tooth or WiFi is going to take many many attempts. A lot of failed attempts to connect with those dreaded error messages. Once you successfully get the TV paired to the app, most likely using WiFi, the first thing the TV will demand to do is download and install a firmware update. Actually, I had to download "two" apps. The Vizio SmartCast app "and" the Google Cast app, and must install both on the phone/tablet you are using. "Vizio SmartCast" app basically controls the TV settings. The "Google Cast" app performs the streaming to the TV. The process of adding "streaming service apps" into the Google Cast app such as VuDU, Netflix, YouTube, HuLu and other services. Then, with VuDu (as an example) you login into your VuDu account, and start playing your VuDu movie library on the phone/tablet. In the upper right of the tablet screen you see the CAST icon. Hitting the CAST icon in VuDu allows one to re-direct the VuDu movie onto the Vizio TV itself. Sound awful confusing? It absolutely is !!!!!! Bottom line, the TV looks great. Nice sharp 4K UHD picture. Big! Heavy! Comes with it's own legs-stand, or can be wall-mounted. And remember... you will first need to successfully "PAIR" the Vizio-SmartCast app running on your smart phone or tablet with the TV itself in order to control the TV settings. Which then allows the TV itself to connect to your home WiFi network (or use a wired ethernet connection to the TV). Beyond that, I would HIGHLY suggest forgetting about the Google Cast app for streaming content to the TV. Instead, simply buy and add a physical streaming device to the TV via one of the TV's HDMI ports. Possibly consider adding the 4K version of the "amazon Fire TV", or better yet adding the Roku 4K version to your new Vizio E-Series TV. Forget the Google Cast app. Then, simply rely on the Roku-4K or 4K-Fire-TV, or whatever device you chose for streaming content to the Vizio TV itself. Note: the UHD 4K movies offered on VuDu " will " stream in 4K on this TV using the VuDu app. And they look fantastic! However... you will need a very fast internet connection for streaming any 4K content, or better yet go with a HARD-WIRED ethernet cable connection to your streaming device from the router. Why Vizio went the "Cast" route on any of their TV's is beyond me and was a terrible decision on Vizio's part. I can guarantee anyone that buys this Vizio E-series Smart-Cast TV, that they will like the TV itself but HATE the TV reliance on the terribly flawed and messy "SmartCast" app. And for many, Smartcast just could be the deal breaker for this TV. Like I said, just buy an add-on 4K streaming device for TV content. Or only use your satellite box, Tivo box, cable tv box. That works too. But you will still need the SmartCast app up and running to control most TV settings. Lastly, the TV itself has HDMI and various inputs on the back, for connecting the satellite provider box or a Tivo box or a cable box. The TV itself IS NOT cable ready. This TV DOES NOT have an internal tuner for antenna TV or direct cable-TV connection via coax cable. The only thing that screws on this TV is that awful SmartCast app. PS. Tivo now comes in an UHD 4K version, and so does the amazon Fire-TV, as well as the 4K ROKU. So many choices out there for getting UHD 4K content onto this TV. And the initial firmware update that is forced onto the TV upon successful app pairing, that firmware update does nothing to help things along as far as improving those SmartCast headaches. At least, not with this firmware release.

By not pre installing apps you have the freedom to use any castable apps from any smart device, unlike pre installed apps! By simply downloading the single smartcast app on your hand held device your display becomes connected enabling casting from any app on that device. In turn this also makes any smart devices connected to the display a remote control for convenience. Vizio recommends an HDMI connection to enable the highest quality picture for your display and have included one free with each Cast Display. We realize this is brand new technology and it takes some time to get used to it. Any TV in this size and price range that does not have a basic TV tuner is flawed. Vizio should provide a tuner box to all affected or prospective buyers. If you ever wanted to cut the cable you would need a box, hence the necessity for one.

In order to achieve the best picture quality and to take advantage of the 4K Ultra HD technology, it is recommended to use the HDMI connections. Most high definition cable or satellite boxes have an HDMI output. If using the coaxial cable is a must, there are external turners that can be purchased. We realize this is brand new technology and it takes some time to get used to it. This 70" is lights out.... Picture quality, Unreal... Seriously stunning... Functionality, SUPER COOL: On this new VIZIO, 70" you can do what we are use to doing like watch TV on your normal cable remote. I have UVERSE and my control synced up automatically so watching cable was easy. What is really cool is being able to stream content onto the TV via my PHONE... I downloaded their VIZIO app on the apple store. They say you can do it on the android too if you dont use apple. After I set the TV and the phone up I was able to stream all of my apps off my phone. (Netflix, VUDU, Etc) I also dowloaded other CAST apps to mirror my photos and videos from my phone to the TV. In addition to streaming from the phone, I actually can control the TV from the VIZIO app on my phone. Power on and off, Volume up and down, inputs, etc. This big 70" won't disappoint. Performance + VALUE... [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
