I recently updated to a Galaxy S8+ and decided to try out this wireless charger. (Wireless charging works by induction the same way a transformer increases or decreases voltage.) I liked the look of the lamp and needed one anyway and, I thought, the wireless charging was just a plus. Well, I was more than pleasantly surprised. Now, I only charge my phone wirelessly, (saving on the wear of the USB port) I always know where my phone is when it's not in my pocket and the lamp is very versatile. (It may take a moment to realize that light bar at the top allows you to twist it so that the light goes exactly where you want it.) The variable brightness is also a great feature. Then, I was sitting at my desk looking at my old phone and the backup external battery charger I bought because the old phone would die before the day was done and had a light bulb moment. Not surprisingly, when I unplugged the lamp from the wall charger and plugged it into the battery charger, it lit up and could charge my phone. So when the power goes out, (and we've had that issue) you still have a light bright enough to light up the room and charge your phone (provided your charger is a 2.1 amp or better.) As for the people who have indicated problems with this light/charger, most of the descriptions of the problems tell me that the lamp is plugged into a low power usb source. So, when I plugged the lamp into my tablet and put the phone on the charger, the lamp started to flicker. Still relatively bright, but not really charging my phone. MAKE SURE YOU USE A HIGH POWER USB PORT. I am going back to Walmart to get another one as a gift.
