I read through the other question and answers and seen where a few people asked if this was a touch screen and was answered with "no, it's a touch PAD." What's the difference between the two? I know that touch screen means just that...you touch the screen but I'm not familiar with the term touch pad. Would this just be the mouse section that you use your finger to move around your mouse? I'm not crazy about the windows 8 but my husband is computer savvy so I'm pretty sure he can replace that with 7 but if we do that would that void out the warranty?
by Angie 2/8/2013

  • A. U CANNOT replace it with windows 7 but u can create a dual boot mode. A touch pad is a pad that is on the keyboard of the laptop. It has the two clickable buttons. You move it with your finger. Like other standard laptops.

  • A. You are correct that is the touchpad. :^) I doubt the warranty will be void. You would be asked by support to restore to Windows 8 if you call with issues. Just use the Toshiba backup software before putting Win 7 on the system. Then you can always go back if you have issues.

  • A. Touch pad is referring to the mousepad. If you double click the pad with your finger it will open links (instead of having to use the mouse button) or you can use the pad with your finger along the side to scroll up and down.

  • A. Yes the touch pad is the mouse where you move your finger around. Idk about the warranty question though.

  • A. On touch screen you would touch the screen with your finger where you would normally click with a mouse. A touch pad is located in front of the keyboard on most laptops. The pad is used to move the cursor around on the screen and then you would click one of the two buttons located in front of the touch pad.

  • A. Yes, the touch pad is the "box" in front of the keys that you use to move the cursor. One advantage of a laptop that comes with Windows 8 installed is that a lot of the gestures and swipes you would do on a touch screen, can also be done on the touch pad. So even if you don't have a touch screen, it is still easy to use Windows 8. Windows 7 can be installed on a Windows 8 machine, and you'll still have the warranty, BUT......., Toshiba can only support the operating system that ships with a laptop, so there would be no support, and your husband would be responsible for getting the needed drivers for Windows 7.

  • A. That depends on what you consider gaming? Look at the specifications for the games you play. Do the specifications of this system match? If it is at the minimum level specifications you may have issues. I can say the games I play would not run on this system at all. GW2 and SWTOR

  • A. Unfortunately I can't answer your question about gaming because the minimum requirements for each game vary. We suggest checking the recommended hardware specs from the software manufacturer’s website or product box and compare those specs against the detailed specs of the laptop. You can see the detailed specs for the laptop here: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/product/pdf_files/detailed_specs/satellite_C855D-S5320.pdf

  • A. The Office installed is a timed version. It works for so many days, then you have to buy a license, or it won't work. What it's asking for is the license code. No license code, no Office. To get a license code, connect to the internet, and click on Office where it says to buy a license.

  • A. No new laptop will come with a full licensed version of Office. They either come with Starter or in this case, a 60 day free trial. After the 60 days, you have two options: 1. Purchase Office. The Home & Student edition is around $110 right now, I believe. 2. Use OpenOffice. This is the free equivalent of Office. You can download free from www.openoffice.org (If you need Outlook, Thunderbird is a free replacement for that particular software. Go to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ www.Mozilla.org provides that)

  • A. To activate the Microsoft Office Home and Student edition, go to the address below. Click the "Try it Free" button. Enter your email address and name. On the following page the product key code is provided. YOU CAN ONLY DO THIS ONCE. IF YOU DON'T WRITE DOWN THE CODE AT THAT TIME, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET IT AGAIN. The software included with the computer is a 60 day trial version. If you wish to continue to use the software past 60 days you must purchase a product key code. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/?WT.mc_id=MSCOM_EN_US_DLC_FAMILIES_131O1ENUS21462

This laptop is pretty good. The windows 8 is amazing and the laptop is pretty fast. You get used to the mousepad pretty easily, though i would reccommend using a regular mouse. Sometimes, when using the mousepad, it switches between my apps that i am using by accident and it gets pretty annoying. This laptop isnt really for watching movies or listening to music since the sound quality is...horrible. However, if you plug in headphones or earbuds, or plug the leptop to an external speaker, then it works fine. i paid $320 for this and i think its about the right price. if you want a laptop that has average or goof sound quality, then i would recommend getting a different laptop. however, for just surfing the web, writing documents or playing games and using the apps, i would get this one. I am having problem with watching some videos using the internet explorer while using windows 8, but if i use internet explorer while using desktop its fine. but that is a windows 8 problem, not a laptop one.

Well, I have had this laptop for about a month or so, and I like what I am seeing so far. The keyboard keys are larger than what I am used to, so I actually like that. I originally purchased it for my daughter, but after taking a look at Windows 8 I knew that she would not be able to use it, so I gave her my laptop instead. I have no complaints so far about the computer, it seems to have a long battery life, the color on screen is good as well. The laptop itself seems to be very light weight. I don't know if thats a good or bad thing. However, the volume seems to be a little off. Not sure why, sometimes it sounds good, then other times it is off somewhat. I was excited to get the Windows 8 version, but I am definately not used to 2 home pages, all the apps, toggling between both home pages, etc. So it will definately take me a while to understand it. One thing to be aware of...there is no manual included with the laptop, which I think really should be included with any computer you buy.

I bought this laptop several days ago when my old Asus died & I use my laptop for work/school purposes. This is a GREAT laptop for the price. I absolutely love it. It has plenty of memory for my personal use, it's fast, very light, and doesn't seem to heat up like my other laptop, even after extended use. It also has pretty good battery life. I bought it in store, and compared to a few other computers in the same price range, the screen/display quality is amazing. Windows 8 is taking a bit to get used to, but the laptop itself is just fantastic. There is only one downside, and it's not even a big deal, but it's worth mentioning. The touch pad has an odd rough texture and it feels weird compared to the usual smooth touch pad. I'll probably buy a wireless mouse so I don't have to use the touch pad as much. Otherwise, great purchase!

Toshiba Laptop

Owned a Toshiba Laptop previously and had good service. When it died I decided to purchase another Toshiba. Bought this computer and within two weeks the hard drive went out (according to Toshiba). After much discussion was able to return it to its place of purchase and decided that it had to be a fluke. I purchased a second Toshiba and this time it lasted approximately 9 months. While using it the screen would go off and in a few seconds would come back on. Within a few days the screen would not come on at all. Had to send it back to the repair depot for repair ( 1 year warranty). After a couple of weeks I finally was able to speak to a human being and was told that the computer screen was bursted (cracked) and was not covered under warranty. I explained to them that it was not bursted when shipped and they did not want to discuss my concerns and offered to replace the screen for $325. Will never purchase another Toshiba product after this experience!!

I like windows 8. It is fun to download and play the apps. Webcam is easy to use and fun to take pictures and videos. I like the feeling of the touchpad. Very fast. The keyboard sometimes misses some of my letters when I type but that is okay because I am used to it because my old computer missed my letters. An old friend got a Toshiba and I knew I wanted one. Very light weight. The screen is HD and works awesome as a DVD player. When I open my computer it automatically turns on. That is very cool. Very large screen. When the battery is on 38% or around that it still has an hour and a half. WOW. The battery life goes down slow which is great because it make my computer portable unlike my old one where I had to have the charger in at all times.

Bought it Friday. Took several hours to download the Windows 8 updates. Then had to add printer drivers. HP said my laser printer was not Windows 8 compatible. so I installed the driver for Windows 7 x 64, and fired right up. Then loaded Microsoft Office 2000. Running in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP SP3. At times it seemed really really slow, but now that my programs are loaded, and printers set up, it seems pretty quick. It's taking me time to learn Windows 8. But that's not the computers fault. One oversight, is that the C855-S5320 has 2 x USB ports, and one USB 3. There was a setup choice about reducing the power to the USB 3. Looking on the bottom, there are two unmarked USB ports, and a third, the USB 3, has a label on it. For gaming, heavy graphics, CAD, you'd want a more powerful machine. For everyday web surfing, light word processing, spreadsheets, this machine is a good buy.

I have several Toshiba laptops and this new one is nice and a very good value. My only complaint is that it came loaded with Windows 8. I've just received it today so have only a few hours playing with it so far but I am not impressed. This laptop is not a touch screen but that wouldn't make the OS any better. Microsoft tried to mimic the Ipad touch but for a laptop that is a complete failure in use. Personally I still prefer XP Pro to any of the newer incarnations. It was simple logical never crashed and did exactly what you told it to do without any extra clicking. 7 isn't too bad and I'm hoping that this new laptop can be set up to run on 7, but that adds to the price!

I bought this laptop for my 15 year old son as a Christmas gift because he was hoping to do some simulation gaming. This was the best I could afford, seeing as good gaming laptops go for over a grand. I read many reviews for many laptops and this one seemed to be the best option. This laptop is not meant for gaming, as downloads take hours and the lag makes it impossible to play. If this laptop was purchased for my personal, everyday use, I would love it. I have spent some time surfing the web, etc. Netflix works well, no lag. I wish I could afford to keep it for myself and get my son something else, but it looks like I will need to return or exchange it for him )=. It truly is nice for most purposes, other than gaming.........One thing though, the battery life is not that remarkable. It only lasts a couple hours at most.

I bought this because of all the features. I liked the separate number pad, the dual core, the apps, and the multi-function touch pad. The windows 8 has been very frustrating but I'm trying to catch on. They really need to send a more detailed quick start for windows 8 since it's a whole new system. Almost everything is different. The concept of using apps is nice though and that's why I'm trying to work with it. After using it for two weeks, I find that the touchpad is not functioning properly. From day one i couldn't get it to work unless I used two fingers and very hard. After days of trying to set it up, I contacted Toshiba and they remotely took over my computer (which was good but then again I didn't really like it because I wondered about my private info being compromised). They uninstalled the driver for the touchpad and reinstalled it twice. After a very, very long time, they came to the conclusion that something is wrong with the computer and recommended that I return it for another one or send it in for repair. All the work that I put into this computer and now take it back!!! AWWW!! Now I need to reset the computer to it's original settings and hope no one can recall the info that was put on it and start all over. Again, I like the concept of the computer and I'm willing to learn but goodness!! Whose testing these machines before they leave the warehouse? There's no way around it, you have to set the thing up totally before you can use it. The set up can be very long. After I get the new one, I'll update my experience.
