Can this hard drive run on USB power or does it require it's own plug to work? Also can it work with a desktop? I'm new to the 3.0 USB thing?

    • A. It only runs on USB power. I've copied from both an Imac and a Windows 7 desktop PC. Current PC has only USB 2.0 input which is compatable as well, but wanted the much faster USB 3.0 so it wouldn't be outdated any time soon.

    • A. The Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive runs off the 5 volts of the USB cable -- it sips 'juice' from your computer. I use mine with desktops and laptops all the time, and it's very reliable. USB 3.0 is actually the fourth version of the USB standard available. USB 1.0 was already obsolete the day the drives became available, so the manufacturers brought out 1.1. USB 2.0 was much faster, and 3.0 is faster still. There are actually more wires in the USB 3.0 cable, but the drives and computers set up to take advantage of it are 'backwards compatible' with USB 2.0.

    • A. The drive is USB powered. You can connect it to any USB port, as the drive is backwards compatible. Of course you will get the fastest operation with USB 3.0

    • A. yes you can but i wouldn't recommend it. I bought this drive less than 6 months ago, transfered my entire hard drive from my computer to the hard drive and it has since died and I have no way to recover my date!

    • A. It comes with EaseUS software which will let you copy an entire HD (hard drive) or a single partition to another drive. The data is saved in a proprietary format, that is, you won't be able to pick and choose data from it, just restore the whole thing. This would be handy in case of a catastrophic HD failure, you could then restore to the state your HD was in when you created the image. If you are planning to use this to replace your current hard drive, and then run your PC by booting off this external USB HD, I'd think again. It would make more sense to replace your existing internal HD with a bigger one.

    • A. Using the included backup software you can backup files, folders and the full system, which is what you're looking to do. You say "transfer", which to me normally means replacing an old drive with a new drive. This isn't going to replace an internal drive.

I got it in the mail in just 2 days and I imeaadtly hooked it up to my computer,it was instantly evident in the "My Computer" window..I installed the software only afther contacting Toshiba as the quick start user guide is pretty basic and gives no clue at all as to how or what to download as far as programs the H.D. had to offer.Seems so small to hold all that data and it's loaded with anti-drop ,bumps ,just about anything you can think of and it still keeps working.Much better than my Western Digital My Passport 1tb hard drive with it's overly complicated softwaare,I mean the user manuel for the W.D. EXT HDD is 74 pages long. Get this drive, you wont be disapointed and at this price you'd be crazy not to pick up such a well made,3yr wrty. and all.I'm very happy.

I bought this less than 6 months ago because I was selling my computer and needed to back up everything I had on the computer. (Over 7 years worth of documents, pics ect.) A few weeks ago out of no where it stopped working. I plugged it into many computers and none of them would reconigze the drive. I had our IT guy from work check it out and it told me it stopped working. It wouldn't spin, load ect. It told me it was luck that I got a bad drive. Staples nor best buy can fix this. I called Toshiba who again said they would be happy to replace it but couldn't do anything for me about the data that was on it. The customer service rep gave me a number to a data recovery they use and when i called I was quoted anywhere from $600-$2400. The guy on the phone said due to it being a 1TB and how much data I had on it it would be closer to the $2400 range. As important as my documents are I don't have upwards to $2400 to spend to recover my date. Very unhappy with the Toshiba hard drive right now and the fact they wont do anything to fix this except send me a new drive.

Most places that sell computers, also sell these external hard drives to back up your computer's data. If you have a laptop, need to back up your at-work computer, want to store your desktop files off-site, or just need to transport HUGE amounts of data, you NEED an external drive. Your computer’s hard drive is at the mercy of mechanical breakdown, electronic failure, lightning damage and viruses. I personally had an external drive and my primary S__g_t_ drive fail in my big personal laptop. The external drive I replaced with a Western Digital My Book Essentials 3TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive from Walmart; the primary internal required a new drive, also made by WD. For several years, I’ve used a 500 GB portable hard drive from Toshiba to back up my at-work computers, and it’s never given me one second of trouble. In fact, it’s saved me a couple of times. I showed it to the big boss a few months back, and he thought it was a good idea; in fact, he told me to get a new one and test it thoroughly (on the company dime, of course). I try to be frugal, even spending other people’s money; and Walmart’s under-ninety-dollar price had a lot to do with selling the idea. I’ve been carrying the Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive in my backpack for two months, now. I have backed up both of my at-work computers, and a ton of data from my home machine, and it takes it all without complaint. It’s very fast, needs no AC connection (it sips all the power it needs from the USB cord) and is small enough to fit in a pocket. Better yet, it weighs about 3-1/2 ounces. If you have an older computer that uses the USB 2.0 standard, don’t worry; this drive will still work just fine; just not as fast as it does running USB 3.0. I use it with an older desktop and two laptops with USB 2.0; it runs fine. I bought a SIIG SuperSpeed USB 3.0 2-Port ExpressCard Adapter from Walmart for my home laptop, and the Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 1TB USB 3.0 SCREAMS! File transfers and backups are super fast. The only problem is that you need an extra AC power adapter for the SIIG device, since ExpressCard doesn’t carry enough current to run a hard drive. Not a failing of the drive or the adapter, just how the ExpressCard standard works. So if you want to preserve your peace of mind – and save ten bucks off the price of a dubious-quality S__g_t_ drive – get the Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive from Walmart.

For those who don't know, a portable hard drive is much like the hard drive in your PC, except in a case so that it is protected and able to be easily portable. This 1TB portable hard drive is priced pretty much the same as comparable models. Like most current portable hard drives it connects to your computer using USB 3.0 (which for the non tech-savvy is the newest revision to USB, which is not yet the standard due to how new it is, and is much faster then USB 2.0, which is the format of USB currently commonly used. USB 3.0 is compatible with USB 2.0, but at the USB 2.0 speeds). The units USB cord is short and is not permanently connected to the device (which is all normal). The devices transfer rate is exceptionally fast (however, I can't compare to other USB 3.0 devices as this is my first encounter with the new format) i transferred 80 GB of files in less than 5 minutes. The dimensions of the device itself are slightly smaller than comparable units, which I liked. The device comes with a back-up software to backup your files, which is optional to install (the installation files come on the drive). I found this software useless as the program would launch and attempt to backup every time I connected ANY external storage to my computer (not just the portable hard drive which the software came with), and in addition to that, windows already has a built in feature to back-up your computer by creating a system image (large file that, in the event you need to restore your PC, can be used to make your computer exactly as it was at the time the image was created, files and all) which i found far more useful then the software, which I ultimately uninstalled. Lastly, while I did feel that this product was priced similar to competitors, I was initially was hopping to find the 2TB version of this device, which is double the capacity for only about $10-$20 more, but was unable to locate one so gave up and settled for this one. Overall the unit exceeded my expectations, and i would recommend it to someone in the market for such a device.

I got this off the local Walmart store and this drive has worked out great for me: 1) For $69 coupled with a 3 year manufacturer warranty (although "limited"), this 1TB drive is unbeatable. 2) I was thrilled to see this drive works perfectly with my Wii to play games, browse, etc. This is a rare achievement for portable drives from what I read. Btw for this to work, I had to partition 200MB as Primary FAT32 and 2 other NTFS partitions. 3) I was concerned about numerous complaints on many online sites of insufficient power causing these Canvio drives to not work at all on USB ports? So I was all set to order an additional USB Y-Cable once I encountered the problem. But Toshiba must have started packaging better quality USB 3.0 cables or something. Because I never had any problem on my laptop's USB 2.0 port or even on my Wii. The only thing is I haven't been able to test the promised speeds on this drive since I don't have USB 3.0 ports - so during my testing, I see the maximum read speed clipped at a steady 25MB/s which is clearly the limitation of the USB 2.0 port I have. The only con I can think of is a lack of a good user manual - they only have instructions for using their bundled backup manager.
