Definitely more happening here than the previous novel. A wounded Ciri regales a friendly hermit with her adventures with the Rats and their end at the hands of a bounty hunter. More people are after Ciri because of her Elder Blood, all for their own personal gain. Geralt, meanwhile, continues his search for the druid circle that can reveal where Ciri is, but he too has someone after his head. Parts of the story is told through flashbacks, from Ciri and those hunting Ciri and occasionally Geralt. The Equinox is used as a reference to make it easier to tell how things happen chronologically, and which sections are "live."

About This Item
The world is at war and the prophesied savior is nowhere to be found. The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, races to find her -- but time is short, and an army is on his heels in the fourth book of the New York Times bestselling series that inspired the Netflix show and the hit video games.
The world has fallen into war. Ciri, the child of prophecy, has vanished. Hunted by friends and foes alike, she has taken on the guise of a petty bandit and lives free for the first time in her life. But the net around her is closing. Geralt, the Witcher, has assembled a group of allies including Dandelion, Milva, Regis, and Cahir, to rescue her. Both sides of the war have sent brutal mercenaries to hunt her down. Her crimes have made her famous. There is only one place left to run. The tower of the swallow is waiting... Andrzej Sapkowski, winner of the World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement award, started an international phenomenon with his Witcher series.
Now, look out for The Tower of Fools, book one of Andrzej Sapkowski's Hussite Trilogy, coming in October 2020!

The continuing adventu...
The continuing adventures of Ciri with the Witcher Geralt bumbling along in the background, surrounded by sorceresses now and again. Told in flashbacks interspersed with other events. Ciri stumbled weary and wounded into the marshes and was found by a hermit. Eventually they learn to trust each other enough to exchange stories on how they each came to be there. Lots of bloodthirsty hacking about, but little other drama, even dandelion and co get barely a mention as the viewpoint is often that of the bountyhunters that Ciri is recalling. The machinations of the sorceresses remain opaque, and for a while the Empire's conflict isn't even mentioned. Still fun, novel and engaging but you do rather wish the story would move on a bit.
The story of Ciri and ...
The story of Ciri and Geralt, the Witcher, continue in this story. Most of the story is told by Ciri as she hides and recuperates in a hermit's hut in the middle of a marsh. She is being hunted by bounty hunters and sorceresses and Geralt is chasing her to help his ward. Ciri is a 16-year old girl who has been under Geralt's protection and has been training to be a witcher even though she would not undergo the mutation that Geralt had. She is the descendant of a powerful elf and has demonstrated remarkable abilities. The Emperor Emrhys wants to marry her. The Lodge of Sorceresses wants to harness her energy. Everyone wants a piece of her. The story flashes between live action and characters retelling their parts which keeps the reader on their toes. Luckily the focus is on the date of the equinox so the reader is always aware of where in the timeline she is. As an aside, the expansion pack of the wonderful Witcher III video game was just released this week so I have been totally immersed in this world, only interrupted by pesky work. The differences in the story lines don't bother me much (in the game Emrhys is Ciri's father, not suitor, but just as interested in getting her back in his palace to sit on the throne). The next episode is slated to be released in the summer of 2017 and I, for one, will be anxiously waiting for it.
