This is one fine story, gritty, well acted and produced. Peck is at his finest, Robert Forester nearly steals the show with his portrayal as an Indian scout and Peck's friend. Eva Marie Saint put a lot of work in her character and is appreciated that she kept that roll without glamour makeup. The suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat right up to the end -- and things jump out and go "boo" in the night. Get ready for a western story with beautiful "hypnotic landscapes" and realism. If you wonder who the cavalry officer is he's James Olson, uncredited. When the liner notes say, "The siege is relentless. The terror grows", it means what it says!
Western fans, it's a 1968 winner that may have been a sleeper but you won't be disappointed. I had a copy from TV on tape but this DVD is Widescreen! Don't look for theater quality surround, just get the movie, get caught up in it and don't leave 'til it's over. You won't want to miss a moment of it. Buy it!
