The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin has all the characteristics of a great summer read including disaster, romance, and a twist ending. Although I had the "twist ending" figured out a quarter of the way through the book, it was still a fun way to spend a few hours. This fast-paced book is a quick read and great for anyone who likes to mix adventure with romance.

This is a story about Ben and Ashley, two strangers who charter a plane during a snowstorm to make it home to their partners. During the flight, the pilot has a heart attack and crashes in the wilderness, leaving Ben and Ashley stranded in miles of snowcapped mountain wilderness. No offense, but I found this surprisingly good. I'm not one to read books in this genre and I wasn't sure how I would feel about it (or if I would even finish it). But, I did finish it and I liked it. Loved it even. I really enjoyed the theme of two people struggling to survive in the wilderness while also maintaining the main focus of Ben and his love for his wife. I recommend anybody picking this book up and giving it a read if you haven't already.I want to thank Blogging For Books for this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Mountain Between U...
The Mountain Between Us is not your typical love story. Ben and Ashley got to know each other because they really had no other option and as soon as their snow capped journey, or battler to say the least, was over the two went their separate ways. The two find their way back together months later and decided to get to know each other a little more not just because they have to, but because they want to.

The survival story line was quite gripping - how exactly will these two strangers manage to survive and get themselves to civilization? It helps that one of them is a doctor with wilderness experience and that the pilot of the plane was well equipped for back country adventures. Along the way Ben and Alex necessarily open up to each other. Unfortunately the ending reminded me of a Nicholas Sparks novel - there was that emotional hook at the end that just didn't work for me.

This is a captivating novel about the strength of one man to save another person. After their plane crashes, Ben and Ashley are over 11,000 feet in elevation in the snow on a high mountain completely alone in one of the most remote areas in the United States. Ben and Ashley just wanted to get home when a snow storm grounded their plane. Ben has surgery to perform the next day and Ashley has her rehearsal dinner, so they hire a charter to fly them to Denver ahead of the storm. After crashing, Ashley has such a severe broken leg that she cannot move her leg at all. She is completely reliant on Ben and his expertise as an orthopedic surgeon and hiker. Thankfully, Ben had been hiking, so his pack is with him with the supplies they'll need. Unfortunately, food is not one of the supplies and Ben is injured himself. As each day and week passes, Ben and Ashley get to know each other well. Ben records his experience into a recorder for his wife, Rachel, to hear later. Ashley is continually impressed by Ben's unwavering faith that they will survive and with his physical stamina to transport her and the pilot's dog across mountains. I listened to the novel and couldn't stop, so I completed it in one day while I was doing chores. It's that captivating! I tend to like novels about survival as long as I don't get bored. Sometimes, the daily trials get overwhelming and dull and you just want the plot to move along in survival stories. This one has a well-paced plot, providing flashbacks appropriately to advance the relationship between Ben and his wife Rachel. There is obviously something going on with their marriage, so the fight to survive becomes therapy for Ben. For Ashley, she can't help but compare Ben to her fiancé as she listens to his messages to his wife.. She fears that she is merely settling and that true love can exist. The will to survive is amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, completely engrossed, so I recommend it.
