THIS is cinema.

This is one of the best films of the year. I’m honestly debating on putting this above “Joker.” Robert Pattinson gives the best performance in his career; he is incredible here. But, Willem Dafoe gives an absolutely phenomenal performance here. It’s the second best I’ve seen all year; behind only Joaquin Phoenix of course. He automatically transforms into this role, and even though he has had some truly incredible performances, this is one of his best. I think he should win an Oscar for his supporting role. Despite the film being horror, there is a very dark sense of comedy here, and every joke landed. Let’s talk about Robert Eggers direction for a second; he does an absolutely amazing job. It’s some of the best directing I’ve seen all year. I have not yet watched his previous film “The Witch,” but I’m planning on watching it very soon. This film proved to me that horror movies can still be good; we’ve had some truly atrocious horror over the past decade, but this film is a wonderful piece of art. Robert Eggers wrote the film, and I do think this could win an award for screenplay; I would totally support a win. The tension builds in this film extremely well, and I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire runtime. Finally, I absolutely loved the abstract aspects; this is a film that is open to question. Anyone could come up with any theory, and no one could say any theory is incorrect. It’s one of my favorite horror movie of the year, it’s one of my favorite A24 films, and it’s one of my favorite of the year. The film only bored me once, but the rest of the movie was extremely entertaining, and it’s a film that I would rewatch many times. It is a masterpiece.
