Good writing, directing, and strong action scenes are what makes this a cut above the rest of the earlier Superman flics. Gene Hackman as Superman's arch foe hurts none either. The storyline carries well from the first scene to the last, and a cast of more than capable actors carry the film to it's conclusion. The technological advances since the original Superman films(no knock against Christopher Reeve or the films), allow this film to show Superman in action, as just that: a being with capabilities no mortal human could ever possess. No spoiler here, but the action scene involving Lois Lane, a jetliner, and the Space Shuttle has to be one of the best ever.
